In WW2, the US Army intercept stations along the west coast was sure the invasion of the US was imminent due the strength of the IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) cw sigs being copied, those ships had to be right off shore to be that strong.
FCC RID quickly direction finded (lol) these same signals, due the alarm presented by the US Army and found they were transmitted from Japanese home waters or from Japan itself. The expanse of salt water is almost as good as a sheet of metal for a ground plane, offering very little loss to signals that traverse it. They can/could likewise hear you just as well. Once you get east of the Rockies you (or at least I) seldom get any Asian action.
