Reduced to clear or full price?

Meat is so expensive in Australia the stores put security tags on them as people are shoplifting meat to high noon these days.

Used to be razor blades and other high end toiletries getting lifted, but last two or three years beef and lamb are now out rating them for shop lifting... 8)

Fellow was on the news last week seen via CCTV shoving a tray of lamb chops down his track suit pants, when challenged by store detectives he did a runner, still with the tray of lamb chops too... ;)

Meat sales are a common feature of US supermarkets. They call them "loss leaders", meant to get people into the store and hopefully also buy all sorts of high margin junk food (pasta, chips, soda, bread, etc) that they don't need. It's typical to see meat on sale for half price, on a frequent enough basis that you can wait for sales and load up, filling your freezer.

I'd have thought meat would be inexpensive in Australia, aren't there a fair amount of ranches there?

I'm most concerned for people living in Western Europe, where the governments are most likely to buy into the EatLancet/Vegan nonsense, and try to coerce the population into eating ultra processed pea protein in place of meat. Good margins for the food processing companies, bad health for the public.

Meat is very expensive here, mainly due to prolonged drought conditions and also prices are driven up due to the buoyant export market to Japan, Korea and China.

Ham off the bone: $20-00 per Kg.

Lamb forequarter chops: $17-00 per Kg.

Lamb Whole Leg roast: $14-00 per Kg.

Beef Scotch Fillet steak: $36-00 per Kg.

Pork Rashers: $20-00 per Kg.

White meat (fish, chicken & turkey) is considerably cheaper.

There was a farmers protest here about the government allowing imported pork from Canada when our own farmers cannot get a decent price at market.

A lot of our seafood is imported from Asia and is second rate quality.  I will not buy Asian seafood, they use chemicals to enhance prawn and fish size in large fish farm tanks, chemicals that speed up growth and those chemical are banned in this country. >:(

Massive spring flooding and a summer drought wiped out a lot of meat exports here. Trump's great pork embargo against China has them looking at other sources for meat. 1.4 billion Chinese have to eat and they love pork.

Trump should knock on Canada's door for pork, Canadians have been dumping it on our market for past two years despite local farmers struggling.

Global trade is killing some of our local farmers, fisheries and other industries who cannot compete with the price of imported products, I will not buy imported meat or seafood as a matter of principle, however, many fellow Australians cannot afford to do so and buy on price rather than origin. :(

The boss told me we lose money on every item on the front page of the ad, but mostly make up for it in volume. There's a local amish candy shop that comes in and cleans us out of a pallet or two of bagged sugar when we do the cheap sugar ad, we def get raped on that deal... and loading 2k pounds of sugar by hand into a pickup is less than fun.
