Are there any left??? I'm talkin' 8 MHz....
« on: April 06, 2012, 1532 UTC »
Been listening on and off as time permits, but haven't seen nor heard of any 8 mhz beacons lately...  I miss them - has anyone been listening there?

 ???

I'll sometimes park the rig on 8 MHz and I find I will hear (if I listen long enough) sometimes a tuner-upper, on occasion a dasher, and I heard a ditter there on and off a few months ago.  Maybe not quite on 8000 kHz exactly, but these oddities seem to pop up near there from time to time.

Things seem to be quiet on the board lately - there's gotta be something interesting going on out there!

I've been listening there, too, and I also have not heard any of them.

It's been a poor year all around for beacons here. I can see some of the 4 MHz beacons on a spectrum waterfall but the only one I've been able to actually hear fairly well lately is the dasher on ~ 4096.57. I've occasionally heard bits and pieces of the temperature beacon. But nothing around 8 MHz.

Some of the 13 MHz beacons have been coming in fairly well lately.

Weather's been too crappy to "hoist the sail" on mine at the new QTH. Maybe later this spring...

Peace!

Yeah, not too bad a signal here in the Mojave Desert.  Center freq is about 7999.84 right now (0352 UTC) and drifting down slightly.

On the Global Tuners ( south western desert receiver )at 1330Utc a rare catch indeed.
I was listening to the Hiker Beacon on 8.0Mc...I decided to dial down on the
old Pike Dasher freq. of 7998kHz and low and behold I heard Pike which is a long 2 sec dash
with a space of about 5-6 secs.  Then I dialed back up to 8.0Mc and there was Hiker also.

What a treat to know a that both of these beacons are on the air at the same time.
I'm amazed, for it has a few years since both of these beacon have been heard at the same time.

Two 8.193 to 8.195 MHz bcns to try for
yes, there are still some 8 MHz signals - "S" is silent pending a visit someday by the ops..., but hre are two in the West some could try for:

8193.75 or so - "MarinDit" 10 mW nor. Calif. - about 80 dits per minute
8149.5 (chips) Inyo Whooper dasher - daytime only second harmonic quite strong - also 4097.25 with a "whoop" in LSB mode. 70 dashes per minute or so, if I recall - 73 - v-v
