Re: Pirates 250.000-270.00 MHz FM SATCOM

Yes, it can be a mess up there on those old FLTSAT UHF transponders. It used to worst prior to the 2009 swoop. Some days it is like listening to CB radio.

I am generally parked on 260.7250 and 262.2250 and 263.5750 are currently busy with traffic as I am writing this. Bellow are some of the transponders that I have listen to on a regular basis. All frequencies are 12 kHz wide FM. The transponders are actually wider than 12 kHz but the Brazilian Pirates do not have "real" SATCOM radios.

253.8500
254.1500
255.5500
257.0500
257.5500
258.3500
260.3750
260.4750
262.3250
262.4250
262.8450
263.5750
263.6750
263.8000
263.9250

Now, since these pirates generally do not have radios which will tune properly to these UHF transponder, you will often find them off frequency. For example, the official transponder is 262.2250 but you will find the pirates on 262.2300. For the most part, the UHF transponders do not really care what frequency you use for uplink because most of them are 25 kHz wide. Even if you uplink 5 kHz off frequency this will be translated 5 kHz off frequency on the downlink.

I generally use an ICOM IC-R8500 with a Dorne & Margolin DM C120 antenna. If I feel like "rocking the boat" I will then connect my LST-5 or URC-111.

This is the day to day activity on the birds peacetime, imagine how fun it will be when war breaks out.

I have heard them using my T2FD (Barker & Williamson) HF antenna but the true signal path is Right Hand Circular Polarized.

I can hear them on a discone, surprisingly strong and clear.
