The Mighty KBC - 9450kHz 12/15
« on: December 16, 2012, 0024 UTC »
Either they fixed their transmitter between this week and last, or last week's conditions to Europe just stunk.  SIO 444 into Madison at present.  I switched on at 0000; so far there've been a few songs I haven't known and a few I have (Pat Benitar, the Eagles.)  Contending with some static just at the moment, but I imagine this'll decrease as the band opens up.

I'm bummed, though.  It figures the one week conditions stunk thoroughly, they played my song request.  :(  I had an email saying it went out, but I couldn't hear it!

Signal strength is up, but as luck would have it, a big blob of noise moved in from 9450-9456.

Listening in sync-AM/LSB, the modulation still seems to be low. Hard to hear, even though the carrier is doing well.

What the heck is up with the noise blob?  The signal's back up a ways, modulation-wise, but there's still noise.  Is this the fault of the old transmitter they're apparently using, do you think or is some other station interfering?

Ooh hang on, there's quite a bit of flutter, but the signal strength is well up again.  0047.  :)  Back to 434-444, if a bit fluttery.  Bye bye noise blob, hello KBC!

There are a bunch of noise blobs like this all over 31m, its not the Bulgarian transmitter.

Do you see/hear it too? If so, that would be "good" in that I'm not going to hunt for it around here, yet definitely bad in that its everywhere.

I was definitely hearing noise on that frequency beyond what normal static would've been.  It almost sounded like an ineffective jamming attempt, like what's normally audible below Radio Marti on 40m.  I didn't check the rest of 31m for similar - too interested in the show! - but if it was everywhere, somebody else is maaaaaajorly throwing out junk.  Now to figure out who the heck it is.

As for last week's issues being stinky conditions or the transmitter having a glitch, sounds like it was the former.  Eric saying 'Last week, conditions were very bad on shortwave.' with no humor in his voice at all... things really must've been rotten everywhere.  Repeating the digital transmissions was a wise idea, hm?
