R Uganda (tent) 4976 0440 UTC 11Jan13
« on: January 11, 2013, 0505 UTC »
Have been checking lately for Radio Uganda reportedly re-activating 4976.  Noted a carrier there tonight above the usual LA on 4975 with a good opening to E Africa.
No audio heard, although noted carrier up to S7 at times.

12 Jan 13  Better tonight.

0313 fadeup into S4 carrier, no audio
0332 Music alt with OM talk.  The talk is the excited DJ-like patter, in Swahili-English mix.  Music is nondescript dance, not
        sounding E African
0400 Nothing at the TOH except dead air
0401 EE nx by OM in a very low voice.  Many ments "Uganda", "Ugandan economy". etc.
0405 cut to a reporter?
0410 continuation of nx.   Commentary? - sev ments "community"
0415 Brief frag of choral music, then a return to pop music show.

Fadeup to S9 peak around 0410, very choppy fades on the fadeout after 0420.  Low modulation (nice house, nobody home!)
4975.97kHz, and can only listen in USB due to the carrier on 4975.
No formal ID heard.

That's a nice catch. I think I've heard them maybe 4-5 times in years of tropical dxing?

Try them in the late afternoon before the LA's start making it north,if you're able to.

Thanks, Pigmeat.

I have, in general, had pretty lousy luck DXing East Africa late afternoons, and the TX sunrise scenario has been far more productive for me.  Saying that, I just noted that my '87 QSL from RU was for the BC ending 2100.  Yeah, it's worth a try some afternoon this weekend!
