Radio Habana Cuba Hurricane Status
« on: September 27, 2022, 1236 UTC »
Figured I'd check RHC's status as Hurricane Ian crosses the western tip.  Will update as I remember to check, feel free to log findings.

 UTC
1234 11760 am Good reception in Spanish from Bauta (per schedule).
1302 11760 am Reception has grown significantly more faint, only frequency of nine scheduled to be transmitting I can receive.
1304 11760 am Reception returns to good levels
1321 11760 am No Reception
1344 11760 am Occasional faint reception, sounds as if carrier comes and goes.  No reception on any other frequency.
1356 11760 am No Reception
1500 No reception on any frequency.  This probably means the Numbers Station is out, a bad situation - no one wants Cuban spies wandering around without marching orders. 🙄  ;D
1602 No reception on either frequency (11760/15140) scheduled to be broadcasting
1852 No reception on 15140
2000 15140 Carrier no audio, should be English service - No reception on other frequency 13680
2204 No reception of any RHC broadcast including scheduled Numbers on 17480 - there are undirected spies in our midst 😬

That's the Pinar del Rio district where all the good cigar tobacco comes from. There's going to be a shortage of Cuban cigars in about four years.

CUBA. Anomaly due to hurricane Ian! 5025, RHC (not Radio Rebelde), at 0603 UT, Sept 27. In English
and // 6060; with 5040 being silent. RHC on 5025 made for stronger than usual QRM for SIBC (5020).

It doesn't make any difference, you can't hear SIBC on this side of the Mississippi when either Rebelde or Radio Havana is using 5025. They peg the "S" meter regardless.

A good chance to DX Radio Quillabamba, except they keep odd hours. Won't sign on til 0957 UTC if EIBI is accurate.

Radio Quillabamba doesn’t sign off until 0200 UTC so listeners in Eastern North America can hear it before they sign off for the night.

Songs are identified with Shazam if needed. I usually use KiwiSDR receivers. Reception from my QTH is using a Hermes Lite 2 with a 40 meter band Inverted V at 40 feet.

PERU. Sept 25 observations:

5025, clear of Cuba from 0753+ UT; so from 1039 to 1050 UT, had Peru (R. Quillabamba) reception; a pleasure to now
hear Peru without Cuban QRM! Absence of Cuba also helped the reception of SIBC (Solomon Islands), on 5020.

5040, heard with Radio Rebelde (ex 5025) still on the air at 1105 UT. These were brief anomaly caused by hurricane Ian

SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC, on Sept 26, at 1157 UT, with prayer in English ("Our heavenly father . ."); closing ID
in English; National Anthem; 1200, immediately into non-stop pop songs; still on the air 1315+. Hiroyuki Komatsubara
(Japan) noted SIBC still on the air at 1448 UT, on the same day.

With the power out in Cuba, that means the MW stations on the islands further south and the north coast of South America should be audible.

Speaking of Solomon Islands - I had a solid carrier on 5020 @ ~ 11:10z this morning and at times could make out what sounded like a female voice & music, but nothing positive to verify.  I have been trying to get a positive catch on this station for years.

Sept 29 - Thursday: SOLOMON ISLAND. 5020, SIBC - Voice of the Nation, 1027-1108 UT. Somewhat less than
semi-readable; 1042 to 1052, with a rebroadcast of a speech given on the 23rd ("SIBC has been the voice of our
people . . . celebrate 70 years . . . I wish you all a happy celebration"); 1052-1059, preaching in English; 1101, intro
calliope music, then news in English (soundbite of Manasseh Sogavare's [Prime Minister of Solomon Islands],
address to the General Assembly of the UN [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVy68Hnh6tc ]); 1108, ID mid-way
through the news. Cuba continues to be silent on 5025!
