Its been coming & going over the past few months. Today is different...

At 2201Z and ID! Yes an ID!    "WRIT HD-2 Milwaukee"  

Well its something, I guess. Probably streaming from WRIT's site and pumping it out on 1690 here. So, for now its still UNID.

What?  *blinks*  Someone's definitely streaming it nearer you.  I can copy WRIT here on 95.7, but it's fair at best when it's in.  No clue about their HD services, but I've never heard of a 1690 outlet for them. 

I admit, I'm glad there's finally been an ID.  This's been bugging me!

Its definitely around here. One day I happened to be driving around when it was on and as I drove a few miles east, it dropped out.

Tuned in 1320Z this morning to see what's on and the x-band (1620-1700) is still going strong. Tuned to 1690 and hearing a talk show, which is WVON from Chicago. Rotated the loop and heard "Monster Mash," but it ID'd as R Disney, which is KDDZ from CO. These stations will be going away in the near future as the sun continues to rise and energizes the D layer.

The Radio Disney out of colorado never shuts up, it seems.  Usually what I can get on the X-band is CHHA Voces Latinas out of Toronto, sometimes a sportscaster yammerer on 1620, KCJJ out of Iowa dominating 1630, that Disney affiliate, a mess of sportscasters and sometimes Radio India on 1650 (I wish that one were more common), and either CHTO or the talk station from chicago on 1690.  1700 is dominated by another sportsbabbler, 1710 forget it, and everything for 10kHz to either side of 1670 is splattered to heck by local WTSO.  Ann-oy-ing~!  I can rarely get Reality radio out of Ada, Michigan on 1680, but that's always subject to severe adjacent channel headaches when I manage it.  1600is a wash, though very occasionally a Hmong-language station from over in Minnesota is audible.  I wish that one were clearer too, honestly.

1600 KPNP is a Hmong station about 18 miles from my QTH and it has issues. Tuned in now and the audio is a bit muffled. Earlier this summer/spring they had some other audio problem that made it nearly unlistenable.

We have another Hmong station 690 KFXN. Its 500 W during the day with a pattern to the ESE (~105 degrees).  At night, the pattern is very similar but they turn the power way, way, way down. Down to 4 W. They're 3 miles to the ENE of me and I can't pick them up at night, however I'm off the side of the pattern in one of the nulls.

Did it change formats? I seem to remember it playing either pop music or Radio Disney last year. It fades in here in the evening, or late afternoon around now I guess, over top the semi local "carrier current" college station, which is 10 miles away but puts in an S9+15 signal here during the daytime (suggesting they are at least slightly exceeding the unlicensed MW FCC limits). It took me a while to figure out who they were, they ID like once or twice a day, and otherwise play non stop music.

Speaking  of unlicensed MW stations... with the holidays coming up, I'm curious to see if "WEDG" appears again this year. They were not on much last year, but the year before they were on 1610 from before Thanksgiving until after Christmas, almost 24/7. Non stop Christmas music.  They came in well here, S9+20 at times, I don't think Andrew Yoder had much luck hearing them, however.

Oh that's right, that sportscaster is an Indiana station.  I know there's also been a pop station out of the same state, also on 1620...  Not sure where it went, but Pigmeat is right about it existing.  As for KPNP on 1600, that's probably part of the reason I haven't caught much of them lately: Muffled audio.  Then again, the PL-660 is much better for SW than it is for medium and longwave.  I admit, the DX-398 is far better for the lower bands.  I need to get it back out and do some serious MW DXing here, with winter on the way. 

I did spot the news elsethread that our local Disney affiliate is going silent.  Maybe that will lead to some interesting catches?  I know I've had a Spanish-language Mexican music station out of Wyoming once or twice, but I wonder... 

I have no chance of hearing any sort of station, pirate or otherwise, on 1610 once December kicks in.  A local audio description of the town's holiday decorations or something plays on a continuous loop, including sponsor info, from December through to the new year.  No chance of CHHA, let alone anybody else.  Darnit!

Your local Disney affiliate, WKSH 1640, went silent on Sept 28th. They filed an STA on Oct 22nd with the FCC to stay silent for up to 180 days pending a sale. Today, I heard them on the air (logged elsewhere).

They weren't on last night, as I was hunting for 1640 KDZR in Oregon and thought I heard KDZR for a short time, but never got an ID. They were playing the same song as my local Disney station. I did hear KZLS in OK & KBJA in UT without problems.

Went looking tonight for KDZR and heard a strong station I had not heard before, and fortunately, they ID'd (frequently). WKSH is back. Guessing the sale is done and they're getting ready for the new format.

No idea when they're switching, but need to stay tuned.
