Canary Islands Pirate 5780 AM 2302- 02/21/14
« on: February 21, 2014, 2309 UTC »
I guess this is for real, putting a nice signal in here at 2306 with a Katy Perry tune, about S-9.
There is no African Pirate HFU section, , so I figured Canary Islands are close enough to Europe.
Still on 2323 but t-storm static is bad now, Cindi Lauper with "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" 2338, Horizon FM ID.

From Anker Peterson in Denmark:

" I had sent my report to studio@horizon.fm . The quick reply: ”Good evening Andy. Many thanks for your e-mail. I can confirm your reception of Horizon FM on Saturday 15th February 2014  on 5780. This signal is from our transmitter site on north Tenerife with a power of 75w carrier feeding an inverted V antenna. We should have some E-QSL designs in a few days. I am building a new output stage to give around 1.1KW PEP and hope to have this finished in 3 weeks time. Kind Regards, Andy. ” It came from andy@horizon.fm . "

One of their DJ's in the morning hours is also called Andy, according to their website.

Getting some threshold audio here at 0006 UTC amidst the heavy atmospherics. Very weak music heard, but not enough to ID songs. 0020 UTC definite music but S3 signal and S8 static crashes are killing my ears. 0022 UTC I'm hearing announcer I think....maybe the placebo effect. I give up....too much noise and not enough signal. Straining to hear weak signals in the noise takes it's toll on the imagination!

Some in Europe think it's still a joke being played upon us, see comments below:
> Both these facts indicate that the transmitter really is on Tenerife as also indicated by a QSL received by Andreas Schmid.

That’s not true Anker. Best signal both the evening and the morning is coming from England / Ireland. Wolfy Bueschel heard today from some remote Perseus SDR and the best signal was in the area of Blackpool and Manchester. On my 300 degrees Beverage (> UK) the signal is very strong, from the direction of 240 degrees, (> Tenerife) only a very weak signal. And the sent QSL images show only the FM transmitter on Tenerife - there’s not one picture of the shortwave transmitter on Tenerife. Why?

This show reminds me of the broadcasting from „San Marino" in the 80s.

Had a good opening for this Feb 23, 2014 at 0055 UTC with a techno dance tune pounding in at S7, then Lady announcer at 0158 UTC followed by Ads with Man announcer....dropped out completely just after 0100 UTC. Signal reminds me of the old Radio Dublin on 6910 KHZ in the 80's....if it is from Tenerife, I seriously doubt 75 watts....

Years ago I was on Euro-Pirate website and ran into a guy in the Canaries who wanted to set up a SW pirate op there. I told him I thought it would be an excellent location to hit both Europe and North America. We exchanged a couple of PM's and he dropped out of sight.

I doubt if it's the same guy, and it may be a hoax, but I'd give my left testicle to be able to tx from the cliffs of Tenerife.
