Omar Sharif, the dashing, Egyptian-born actor who was one of the biggest movie stars in the world in the 1960s, with memorable roles in Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and Funny Girl, has died. He was 83.

"Seven Pillars of Wisdom" is one of the best books I have ever read. It tells the story, by and of, T. E. Lawrence in World War I, which in turn inspired "Lawrence of Arabia", the movie. There are lots of copies available through used bookstores. I recommend it highly. Supposedly this book was required reading for British soldiers deployed for clandestine warfare, all the way through WWII.

Towards the end of WWI Lawrence was intensely involved in the partition of the Middle East. In fact, some have said that he is partially responsible for the current state of affairs there. Regardless, he was an advocate for Arab rights during that period, and understanding the political situation there now requires an understanding of his role there at the time.

Omar Sharif's role in that movie was based on a character in the book. I think he did a good job, as did Peter O'Toole, who portrayed Lawrence.

Other than the fact O'Toole was 14 inches taller than Lawrence.

Tell me Capt. Fansome, how is Deraa in the winter?
