Pink Floyd has disbanded

Just as many fans had suspected, Pink Floyd is officially over. David Gilmour confirmed that the band would not reunite in the coming years, and that last year’s The Endless River, their first record since 1994’s The Division Bell, would be their last.

“I’m done with it. I’ve had 48 years in Pink Floyd – quite a few of those years at the beginning, with Roger (Waters),” he said in a cover story interview with Classic Rock magazine. “And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95 percent musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter. And I certainly don’t want to let the other five percent color my view of what was a long and fantastic time together. But it has run its course, we are done – and it would be fakery to go back and do it again.”

Gilmour’s most recent statements echo similar ones he made last year. “This is the last thing that’ll be out from us,” he told the BBC after the release of The Endless River.

Now in Classic Rock he added that playing without Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright, who died in 2008, “would just be wrong.” (Founding frontman Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968, died in 2006.)

“I absolutely don’t want to go back. I don’t want to go and play stadiums… under the [Pink Floyd] banner,” Gilmour added. “I’m free to do exactly what I want to do and how I want to do it. Obviously I accept there are people who want to go and see and hear this legend that was Pink Floyd, but I’m afraid that’s not my responsibility.”

Gilmour’s solo album, Rattle That Lock,is due due out Sept. 18.

IMO, they hadn't recorded anything significant since "Wish You Were Here". in '76. Once they ran out Barrett's material and his inspiration, they were never the same.

I remember walking into a club in 1980 and seeing disco types dancing to "Brick in The Wall". That was truly a cold day in Hell. If Syd had witnessed it, he would have taken Eugene's axe and beheaded his former bandmates.

I never paid much attention, but wasn't their music primarily disco-oriented?

Live at Pompeii is one of my favourite live concerts ever.

After the Wall, I say they stopped really being the Floyd. Comfortably Numb though is a great tune, and that is on the Wall.

"Live at Pompeii" was required watching when I was a teenager. It's theater release was perfect, just a tad over a year after "Dark Side of The Moon".

Al, have you ever gone night swimming at the Ft. Pierce inlet when the tide is going out? I understand it can be a life changing experience.

Yeah I agree, although  I thought "Animals" was all right too. By the time "Brick" came out and they achieved Rock God status, their best was definitely behind them.  That was when I stopped buying Floyd...
