Very good conditions last night. I was amazed when a week or so ago I got a dozen or two decodes from Madeira. Last night I got 229. Also respectable numbers from the various west coast stations.
I did get 1-3 decodes from stations in Alaska, Japan, Australia, etc. They’re not listed here as that is too speculative, and quite possibly just bad decodes. But conditions seem to be improving as we move into winter, with longer nights, and less static from thunderstorms. The K and DST indices were also better last night.
I used an experimental version of Amalgamated DGPS last night, it adds one additional step - it varies the demodulation frequency from 25 Hz below nominal to 25 Hz above, in 5 Hz steps, so try and account for transmitters being off frequency. I do see anywhere from 10-25% more decodes for the weaker stations using this (I also ran the exact same I/Q files through ADGPS again, decoding normally, for a fair comparison). Many more decodes for the 684 UNID station, 14 vs 4, however. Once you get to the bottom of the list, with the every strong stations, the improvement, if any, is more on the order of 1%. So I may make this an option in the program. Note that it does substantially increase the CPU usage, and I find it takes about 5 times as long to process a file. Still faster than real time, but only by a factor or 2 or 3 now.
