FORT WORTH, Texas — Troubled electronics retailer RadioShack has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in just over two years.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based retailer filed its petition in bankruptcy court in Delaware on Wednesday.

The company says it's closing about 200 stores and evaluating options on the remaining 1,300.

In a statement, RadioShack President and Chief Executive Officer Dene Rogers said since the company's bankruptcy filing in 2015, the retailer had made progress in stabilizing operations, including reducing operating expenses by 23 percent.

But Rogers says several reasons, including a partnership with wireless carrier Sprint that proved not to be as profitable as expected, prompted the latest bankruptcy filing.

General Wireless, part of hedge fund Standard General, acquired the RadioShack trademark and many of its stores after its 2015 bankruptcy.

RadioShack was founded in 1921. Long known as the place to find batteries and obscure electronic parts, in recent years the company tried to remake itself as a specialist in wireless devices and accessories.

That strategy largely was stymied by the advent of smartphones.

RadioShack has tried to update its image but faces formidable competition from online and discount retailers.

Offer them 50 bucks for their entire stock of knobs, Al. There must be pallets of the things in various sizes sitting in those old Tandy warehouses. And get what they have left of those little handheld football games they sold in the late 70's. Those things are ready to make a comeback, I can feel it in my bones.

I had the two-player version of that game. If you could get outside right, it was always wide open for an easy touchdown.

Glenn Hightower and John Denker formed APh technological consulting, largely in response to an ad in the LA Times looking for people to do LED games for Mattel. APh went on to do most, if not all, of those games for Mattel, making a lot of money until the onslaught of cheap competition from the Orient caused the market to collapse.

APh went on to do most of the early games for Mattel's Intellivision video console; the market for that followed a similar path.

Oh, those were the days...

Radio Shack, join Tower Records, Silver Platters, the Wherehouse, Borders Books, B. Dalton Books, Blockbuster Video and many other great places to shop in the 70's and 80's and 90's that are dead because the technology behind them is dead or dying.

RIP.

And soon enough you can probably add to that list "the shopping mall".

It was MDK, but that's ok. The trick was delaying the move to the right for a beat, like the freeze option we ran in HS, then jamming that button to the right like Hell to the right side and down the field.

Al, I hear there is place New Mexico where you can pick up those Intellivision consoles and games for nothing. You've got to dig around for them but they're there. Perhaps you should let anyone you know who lost money in that fiasco, (who would be that boneheaded?), that they're out there and perhaps they can recoup some of their investments? No need to thank me, I'm just that kind of a guy.

He can get some copies of the ET game cartridge for the Atari 2600 while he's at it.

Al may know someone who lost money in that fiasco, too. I've heard him grumble about it.

They've been in a downward spiral ever since TCS stopped buying from them...

Mostly, I just couldn't find what I needed there any more.
