Park site for amateur radio field days

via the Iowa Press-Citizen:

Amateur radio field days will be at 1 p.m. June 28 and 29 at Scotts Church Corner Park, about seven miles east of Iowa City on Highway 6.

Flooding across Iowa this year has brought attention to the need to keep communication channels open in the event of catastrophic natural disasters. During Hurricane Katrina, amateur radio operators played an important role in communication when other ways of getting messages through had failed.

At these field days, "ham" radio operators from the Iowa City Amateur Radio Club will set up antennas and shortwave transmitters to test their emergency communication skills. Power to operate the radios will not come from power lines, but from power sources that would be available in an actual emergency.

The event is open to the public.
