CW Numbers Station 6956 CW 0715 UTC 11 August 2017
« on: August 11, 2017, 0749 UTC »
Tonight I was using the KFS SDR in Half Moon Bay, California, and heard an exchange of full-length CW numbers between two stations on 6956 CW.  I heard both the sender and the number-list receiver.  Both were using straight keys, and the sender's "fist" was a little rough, and slower than the receiver's.  When the sender's list was done, the receiver replied with PMEL DE DVV QSL 2K and the sender replied OK K.  I caught the last minute and half on a .WAV; see below.

For the last several months I've been listening to US Pirates and "Peskies" in this frequency range before, but never heard any numbers stations there.  Any idea who these folks are?

While tuning for pirates tonight around 0700 UTC, I heard two stations sending and receiving numbers on 6956 CW.  I've been listening for Pirates and "Peskies" for several months, but never heard any traffic like this.   I recorded a minute and half of the end of transmission, and posted it on the HFUnderground Numbers forum-- https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,36619.msg136976.html#msg136976

Wonder how common signals like this are in the 6900-7000 range?  This is the first I've heard.  (Heh... maybe two broadcast pirates exchanging future programs?  ;-)

The "Lincolnshire Poacher" used to operate in that range but it was in English via AM mode and signed on and off with the tune "Barnacle Bill The Sailor" played on what sounded like a recorder. I haven't heard it in well over a decade.

I've heard CW up there for years. The Canadian Air Force used to operate in and around 6955 in SSB, but rarely, and I never remember them using CW for air comms there.

Hard to tell. Maybe a couple of hams screwing around with some tweaks and didn't want to do it in band on 40 meters until they had the bugs worked out?

I have moved this to the Utility section, since it was two way communications then regardless of the content it is not likely to be a numbers station.

In the Asia/Pacific region there are many mystery CW stations between 5 & 9MHz, many are Chinese (M89 and variants) and there are still a few CW marine stations about too in this region.

My favourite mode and my favourite part of the spectrum... 8)
