5.055MHz 4KZ
« on: December 21, 2017, 1413 UTC »
Just listening to newcomer 4KZ on 5.055MHz AM, a relay of commercial radio station 4KZ on medium wave from Innisfail, in far northern Queensland.

Playing "Green green grass of home" then at 1400z "4KZ News" bulletin.

As far as I am aware the 5.055MHz AM transmission is rated at 1.5Kw to an inverted "V" antenna and is a direct simulcast of 4KZ on medium wave 531KHz.

Signal very fluttery but a reasonable 5X7 at best, just down 10KHz is "Ozy Radio" south of Sydney on 5.045MHz AM at Razor Back running around 500w but 10dB over.

Additional Information received today re 4KZ:

The 4KZ relay on 5.055MHz is only running 500 watts output for the next two weeks, the transmitter is an American made LPB at 1.2Kw to an Inverted "V" antenna at 14 metres elevation from Innisfail, in far northern Queensland.  The transmitter audio is derived from an Australian made Crusher Digital Audio Limiter.

The target area of transmission is the Cape York region of far northern Queensland and communities in the outback region of the Northern Territory with direct relay from 4KZ on 531KHz AM on the medium wave band.

Transmission schedule: 0500-2300z daily.

Reception reports are welcome and correct reports will be verified with the issue of a "4KZ QSL card" and direct reports via standard mail do not require return postage.

The 4KZ relay on 5.055MHz is not travelling too well, even hard to hear within Australia, however, Ozy Radio down on 5.045MHz powers in each night.

One must keep in mind that the 4KZ relay is only running 500 watts for the time being to an Inverted-V antenna that is not mounted very high.

Also the station is not a big time international broadcaster and is only to serve the outback region of northern Australia.

Should be quiet a challenge for DXers overseas to bag this one! 8)

As I mentioned in the previous post that the email address does not look quite right...I think it's: al@nqradio.com.au
