All India Radio considering closing SW services...
« on: August 19, 2018, 0904 UTC »
Just heard today that the Indian government is reviewing the operating costs of its external overseas services of All India Radio.  They are considering closing the international shortwave section of AIR due to operating costs and "a dwindling overseas audience".

The Minister whose portfolio that covers AIR has yet to reach a decision.  Would be sad to see them go as I have always enjoyed their English service to Asia and the Pacific... :(

Interesting, as they had recently seemed to be increasing services. Guess I need to QSL those remaining AIR transmitter sites.

AIR SW transmitters are in such a poor condition that I have heard it's challenging to receive them even on spot. Still, it would be a pity to lose Port Blair.

Meanwhile I have qsled 45 AIR transmitting sites on MW since 2015.

It's becoming difficult to hear new ones.  :P

Is there any additional news about this, and where did this information appear, in the press?
