Propagation has been good to the west lately for some reason.

ND is a tough catch here, KQWB is the only ND AM in my logbook.

Nice catch. That state's on my "want" list along with South Dakota, as I've already logged every state and province that touches those two. KBRE out of Merced, California, sits on 1660 out here but is probably nullable when conditions are right.

Well, I nulled KBRE out of Merced, California, on 1660 kHz and and heard a Fox Sports talk show and then some local Fargo ads at 0317-0320 UTC tonight (Nov. 28 UTC), so I finally nabbed this one, which is more than 1,700 miles from me.

However, can we really count this as North Dakota? Because when I looked up the transmitter site (https://www.google.com/maps/place/46%C2%B058'32.9%22N+96%C2%B035'03.3%22W/@46.9757986,-96.5864287,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d46.975795!4d-96.58424?hl=en), it turns out that's in Glyndon, Minnesota.

Some guys log these by transmitter site and other guys by city of license.  KQWB city of license is West Fargo  ND.
It's up to you, my logbook shows KQWB as ND and KMOX as MO but neither tower is in the respective state...  :-\
Towers are placed to direct the signal to the target market while protecting other stations on the same frequency.

Your other choices in ND include:
970 WDAY 10kw but their tower is in MN
1200  KFNW  50/13kw but the Vancouver station on 1200 will be a problem from your QTH

That leaves a couple of 5kw stations, 790 KFGO and 1310 KNOX...
both probably tough catches.

Yeah, the Vancouver station already makes WOAI hard to hear on 1200.

I'm a geography geek in addition to a radio geek (I was the kid studying map books for hours on end instead of doing my homework 35 years ago), so I like being precise. However, you make a good argument here. It's not like shortwave, where you're trying to say you "heard" South Korea if you are listening to the WHRI relay of KBS. In the case of mediumwave, the transmitters are usually 20 miles or fewer from the cities of license. Actually, in my case, the transmitters for both KQWB and KMOX are actually farther away from me than their cities of license.

With that in mind, I'm going to rethink how I categorize locations. I'll admit that being able to add two more states to my loggings just by listing my stations differently is tempting!
