Bougainville & PNG
« on: July 09, 2019, 1813 UTC »
BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville (Maus Blong Sankamap), 1051-1128 UTC, July 9.
Mostly monologues in Pidgin; some Pacific Islands music/singing; 1101, drums intro and
news; heavy summertime QRN (static); no VOI QRM at all, which was heard later with
just a carrier (a day with no audio).

PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang (Maus Blong Garamut), 1136-1204* UTC, July 9.
Stronger than 3325 (Bougainville); cutting through the heavy summertime QRN (static)
fairly well; in Pidgin; one comedy segment with background sounds of the audience;
some Pacific Islands pop music/singing; went off the air during the news in English.
My audio of one minute of music and one of talk, at http://bit.ly/32iHjgv .

Nice catches for you Ron, easy ones for me in Australia though.  Sadly the NBC of PNG has cut many of the tropical band and all of the shortwave broadcasts in recent years.  Very few Pacific shortwave or tropical band stations survive these days.

Some nights Bougainville on 3.325MHz cops a smashing from RRI Palagka Rayo in Indonesia on the same frequency in Bhasa Indonesian language.

SIBC on 5.020MHz from Honiara is one of the sole survivors, there is also a private christian radio (Wantok Radio Light) service out of Port Moresby PNG on 7.325MHz with around 1Kw output too.

Vanuatu has also disappeared from shortwave after a severe storm took out the 7MHz transmitter a few years back, they said they would be back but never did return.

New Caledonia also cut their shortwave a few years ago, as did Fiji around the same time and with the Cook Islands.

Very little left now, virtually nothing on MW too, all gone off to FM or internet streaming.  Radio New Zealand the only dominant voice of the Pacific now with Radio Australia being terminated a couple of years back "to save costs" as the government of the day said.

Couple of private Australian stations on 4 and 5MHz that come and go, the 4KZ relay of their MW transmission (Innisfail, Queensland) on 5.055MHz the only one that is consistent.

Ozzie Radio on 4.835MHz hasn't been heard for a while, out of Campbelltown NSW south of Sydney, Australia.

Another newcomer is "Unique Radio, The Sounds of Your Life" from Gunnedah, NSW north west of Sydney on 3.210MHz and 5.045MHz plays golden oldies, 70's 80's and 90's hits.
Happy tuning... :)
