Watch out for those cheap components

Where do you think these were made? You get three guesses, the first two don't count.

WOW!  This is a big reason why I only buy parts from reputable vendors.  Ebay is a crap shoot in that regard, especially with IC's

You can tell by the font printed on it where they originate from... very distinctive, not used elsewhere.

Ehhh??? Huh... Well, one way you could tell that you're getting a 3W carbon resistor, instead of a ceramic wire-wound 5W, is put an inductance checker to it. Look at it this way, at least you could probably use these on RF applications. But, still... Almost makes you not want to break open that carbon resistor, to find out just what's inside that. Hmmmmm, a piece of Tungsten???
“I am often asked how radio works. Well, you see, wire telegraphy
is like a very long cat. You yank his tail in New York and he
meows in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? Now, radio is
exactly the same, except that there is no cat.”
-Attributed to Albert Einstein, but I ripped it from the latest Splatter .PDF March 2025 issue.

It's amazing how much more power a device can dissipate when you put a ceramic insulator on it.

A perfect example of Chineseium !

A quick survey of the internet and the media should yield many fine examples of such...

That was the first thing I noticed too.

Eww, that's gross. Maybe get away with it for experimenters, but let's hope they're not in millions of PCs like those capacitors in the capacitor plague years.

I see that, the font is like an older cement resistor would have, where it seems like most now are printed in dot matrix, where that's more like screened.
