WGN 720 AM 0751 UTC 27 Nov 2020
« on: November 27, 2020, 2318 UTC »
As I was checking for KDWN on this frequency, I instead heard a talk show reminiscing about classic TV rising out of the muddled mix (there's also a little splash from local KIRO-AM 710 on this frequency). This didn’t sound like the Las Vegas station, so I checked an SDR in Peoria, Illinois, and found what I was hearing matched WGN’s audio. I also caught the legal ID at the top of the hour on my radio as WGN’s newscast started.

Distance from me to the transmitter site in Schaumburg, Illinois, is 1,695 miles. My fourth catch from Illinois since the spring. KDWN never really faded in.

Good catch.  I live in California, and KDWN is all I can receive.    I am a Chicago native, so I really miss listening to WGN on the receiver.  Sure, there is the internet audio feed...but its just not the same.

If you haven't already logged it, give WLS 890 AM in Chicago a try.
When the Idaho station reduces power at night and with the BC station nulled
should be not too difficult hearing Chicago...  they have LOUD signal.

edit:  OK, looks like you already got WLS

Yep, I've now logged WGN, WBBM, and WLS from Chicago within the past year. I keep trying for WSCR as well, but KBOI out of Boise has a monster signal that is hard to null from here.

The other Chicago powerhouses 1000 WMVP and 1160 WYLL are probably difficult to impossible for you.
Other upper mid-western stations to try would be KTSP AM 1500 in St. Paul MN 50kw and WTAM AM 1100 Cleveland OH 50kw.
Looks like you already snagged WJR AM 760 in Detroit.

I've listened to that older dude in the evenings on 720WGN. He gets a lot of calls from the Upper Michigan Penninsula. He'll even talk about radio stuff, classic jocks, kick-ass receivers of the 50's and 60's, and even other stations.
“I am often asked how radio works. Well, you see, wire telegraphy
is like a very long cat. You yank his tail in New York and he
meows in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? Now, radio is
exactly the same, except that there is no cat.”
-Attributed to Albert Einstein, but I ripped it from the latest Splatter .PDF March 2025 issue.

Sounds interesting, what program are you referring?
