HF Beacons / Auroral Chorus web site
« on: February 09, 2016, 1745 UTC »
I don't visit the site often so I had not noticed that they had posted a more recent (Jan. 2014) photo of the Rocky beacon

"6626.3 kHz center freq - buzz sidebands - daytime-only. desert s.w."

Video of a 4096 beacon (4095.94 24/7, 3.5 second dash) install in Death Valley area, Viking Mine https://vimeo.com/150772315

The Viking Mine location is not too hard to research and locate and I think I would have a hard time hearing the beacon out here in Orange County (but you never know).

HF Beacons / Audio Recordings Of Beacons
« on: December 22, 2014, 1526 UTC »
I'd like this thread to only be a pointer with links and info for off-the-air recordings of beacons.

No discussions or hijacks on supposedly related topics.

Knowing what to listen for can really help a beginner. What to use to listen, when to listen and so on would be topics for other threads. Maybe if there is enough info it can be a sticky. Token has a number of good recordings with a spectrum display on YouTube but I had no idea they were there until last night.

HF Beacons / November DX-pedition

I just came back from the Hunter Mountain area of Death Valley and I recorded a bunch of audio that I'll post over on YouTube. The most interesting catches were:

The 4079.6 "TMP" beacon is still on the air but very very weak. The 4102.3 "W" wind beacon sounds as if it is sick, possibly a bad power supply. (?)

On the 16th I was at 10,000 feet at Molas Lake, a bit south of Silverton and the noise level was really low. At 6:55 AM local I picked up

2097  "A" beacon, weak but clear
4094.5 "X" beacon, clear and weak with slight fading
4096.24 Hexie with the 1 second dash

Elecraft KX3 transceiver and a trail version of the PAR end-fed ham antenna

short transmission of music at 14:00UTC just now. Modulation, audio quality and signal strength sounded the same as the UNID I just heard on 6925 KHz about 15 minutes ago.

5-31 041:5Z

4094.5 X beacon
4096.24 Hexie dasher
4102.3  possibly the W beacon but very weak

06-01 0400Z

4094.5 X Beacon
4096  hearing what sounded like a long 5 second dash
4096.24 Hexie
4102.3  W a.k.a. Windy beacon. Clearly heard W in Morse but interspersed with other Morse-like dits that made no sense. So is that supposed to be wind speed?
6626.3 fast ditter
6700.5  possibly Hexie 2

Was using my Elecraft KX3 and a center fed 132 foot dipole elevated 30 feet while camped at 8500 feet in the Inyo Mountains near Death Valley
