Spy Numbers / Re: Very Active Frequency

This is V2 or V2a almost certainly - she's a great introduction to spynumbers if you're not already familiar.

Stop by the companion site to HFUnderground, http://www.spynumbers.com - this is a pretty good primer on Numbers Stations in general and there's an ongoing database there of loggings and regular frequencies.

Also the Numbers and Oddities mailing lists track these stations and trends in their appearances and schedules: http://home.luna.nl/~ary/

PS: You might already be aware of these, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to throw some more links out here...

General Radio Discussion / Pirate Radio Reconsidered

Pirate Radio Reconsidered

6.13.2008

International pirate broadcasting has long held a place in the popular imagination; now the impact of British offshore stations of the 1960s is being revisited.

Matt Mason, author of The Pirate’s Dilemma: How Youth Culture Reinvented Capitalism, recently pointed to Radio Caroline and its ilk to illustrate his arguments about the effects of youth culture on the marketplace.

“Run-of-the-mill entrepreneurs look for gaps in the market, but pirates find gaps outside the market such as the English Channel, places they’re not supposed to go, where they can do things they’re not supposed to be doing,” Mason wrote in The Independent newspaper.

Mason goes on in the article to draw parallels between the impact pirate radio had on the BBC and the impact file sharing is having on the music industry.

A different look at pirate radio will be coming to cinemas in 2009: The Boat That Rocked began production in Weymouth Bay off the coast of Dorset, England.

The 1960s period comedy built around the operation of an offshore station, the station staffers, the government officials determined to shut it down and the music of the times. The big-name cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh. Richard Curtis wrote and is directing the film.

via WRDW News:

JUNE 18, 2008

AUGUSTA, Ga---Pirate radio station 99.9 has been put out of business. Richmond County investigators shut the station down Wednesday afternoon.

The radio station was being run out of a home on Macon St. When News 12 first did the story last week a house on Walnut St. in Hyde Park was used to broadcast from.

The Federal Communications Commission was brought it to pinpoint where the signal was coming from. After that Richmond County came in to shutdown the station.

Investigators have seized the equipment. No arrests have been made.

Park site for amateur radio field days

via the Iowa Press-Citizen:

Amateur radio field days will be at 1 p.m. June 28 and 29 at Scotts Church Corner Park, about seven miles east of Iowa City on Highway 6.

Flooding across Iowa this year has brought attention to the need to keep communication channels open in the event of catastrophic natural disasters. During Hurricane Katrina, amateur radio operators played an important role in communication when other ways of getting messages through had failed.

At these field days, "ham" radio operators from the Iowa City Amateur Radio Club will set up antennas and shortwave transmitters to test their emergency communication skills. Power to operate the radios will not come from power lines, but from power sources that would be available in an actual emergency.

The event is open to the public.

For more information, call Jeff Dodd, 351-5867.

I'm not an expert on propagation - but possibility is that Michigan could be close enough the sig was skipping "over" you, but considering this, yours is a good catch!

Welcome!
