Ah the DPRK and FSB finally got to em. RIP.  8)

I need to find where I saved that audio archive of all his Midnight in the Desert programs during his premiere on shortwave WTWW almost 10 years ago. Shortwave is true Coast To Coast, one AM transmitter and full continental coverage. No affiliate relay BS and annoying MW commercials.

General Radio Discussion / Re: Fast food drive through frequencies
« on: September 18, 2024, 0324 UTC »
Most use 2.4 GHz now, it’s possible to get into them still if you buy the proper headset for whatever system they use now since they tend to leave it in default configuration. Like my local KFC used a 3M brand system and if you get close enough with one of the headsets it connects to the base and all the others so you can mess with people at the order windows.

Most mainline USA franchises like McDonalds, Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King, Carl Jr/Hardee stopped using the regular RF systems in about 2014. Sonic Drive in was the last one which I could get from almost 2 miles away with the 10 meter quarter wave on the roof of my former house connected to my BCT15x thanks to their base being on the lowband itinerant of 30.84 MHz. By mid 2017 I stopped being able to receive, even took my handheld in to look for upper crossband frequencies of the headsets on the way to home depot for Xmas decor in November of that year. I even went back later again afterhours with the Signal Stalker nearfield mode running and pressed all the order buttons but no hits.

Most worked crossband duplex, with the base on lowband being common and the headsets on VHF-Hi and some on UHF. Not as common but still enough out there were some that split between VHF-hi and UHF instead. There were also some systems that had an intercom frequency of sort, that allowed all the headsets to talk to each other but not the drive-thru so you didn’t have to yell across the kitchen for something. Those were the most fun frequencies because the staff had no idea anyone else could hear them and the sh*t talking between window orders was hilarious, also if someone messed up and sent the wrong item to the front of the kitchen you would hear them catch an earful for it.

I would die to have that back again, I don’t live in a big area so it might be worth checking out independent non-franchised type restaurants that happen drive thrus with an order intercom before the window to see if they have a normal RF system going, unfortunately there’s none in the rundown area I live now (the last one closed in 2013) but everyone else that does live in a city and love business band scanning as well should keep an eye out and give it a try.

Interesting. Nice potential for a group buy, but not sure how expensive re-shipping each antenna would be.

OTOH I guess you could install a bunch of them aimed in different directions, and select which one to use, as a reviewer did.

Looks like you can get two for $38 shipped https://www.mtcradio.com/buy-one-get-one-free-hdtv-outdoor-antenna-vhf-uhf-16-element-hi-gain-log-periodic-design/

Or also point them all in the same direction and have one hell of a phased array. Like Japanese EME hams do on 2 meters.

HF Beacons / Re: Currently Active Beacons Chat

Since the 3579 beacon KOK seems to be stable I added it to the list at https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,9478.msg27047.html#msg27047

I love that, it's a strong audio on that one for me. Love the interesting choice of frequency. Is it a pirate or just some maritime buoy thing like happens on the 160m band sometimes?

HF Beacons / Re: Beacon "A" 2097 khz
« on: April 18, 2024, 0542 UTC »
The A beacon has been quite elusive of late. I am catching a glimpse of it with a very weak signal audible now and then this evening. Was doubting myself as to if I am really hearing it but it just faded up a bit and was for sure there audibly and visible in the waterfall for about three passes before fading out again. 2097.29 KHz 31DEC23 05:27z Airspy HF+ Discovery 60ft SE/NW longwire

I've had the same issue, I just figured it was the propagation from getting closer to maximum but I'm still getting other signals on similar frequency range pretty much the same. When I was hearing it it was usually in the evening when that part of the band started to open up as the sunset but then as it grew deeper into the night the signal would get lower.

Wonder if it switched to solar power or something then the battery died and won't hold charge anymore.

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: Cuba Jammer on 6513
« on: April 09, 2024, 0810 UTC »
Random frequency for Cuba to be jamming but it's on 6513 now (0223 UTC)

The spread spectrum jammy jam jammer masheen has obviously run amuck again, which it's been known to do.

Well hopefully it dies soon too like most of it's Radio Habanana counterparts.

Anyone ever hear one of these on the air when they do roadworks in your area? Basically a Talking House AM Transmitter in the 27 MHz range.

Ah so they finally put a damn antenna jack on the thing. Still better to just wait for the chinese sweatshop they use to leak the non overpriced version with better features. Just like with the previous version and the XHdata 808

Equipment / Re: Crazy big Magnetic Loop Antenna
« on: September 10, 2023, 2244 UTC »
No point in one for broadcasting since you're transmitting only there's no need to filter out the electric part of the electromagnetic spectrum. A regular small transmitting loop in this size though for a little backyard piracy with the ole 400 watt broadcast transmitter wouldn't be a bad idea though. 45 meters and lower would give decent NVIS coverage over the state by day and the neighboring states by night.

Excuse my ignorance, what does "WARFA" stand for?

We Are Retxxded F'n Azholes.

Mike and I wrote letters to the FCC pleading for assistance / enforcement of W6WBJ and got it.

One week after Crowell was removed from the air, the WARFA people told Mike - we don't need your help anymore, you aren't BLACK, please go away, this is our net.

Wewww some autistic fantasty LARPing you got going on there big boy 10-fo! Don't blow you space cadet hat off now when you try talking to mars on them radios later. CQ CQ 74s

Lunacy, I wouldn't bother with those crazy people on 11 meters...

Who the heck are you going to talk to with nothing but a handheld radio?  It's range is probably 3 or 4 miles FM if you were standing on top of a mountain on a good day.

Ah one of them good ole HAME boys here to chime it with his peter sucking wisdom and busted antenner and million knobs that don't work. CQ CQ 74s and all that bullsheeeeit. 74fdx9 in the 421 zone calling for corntest!

Jesus it was really popping off today. Thank goodness it's easier to get FM handhelds in the USA now that President made the Randy II. My local channel was clear but the splatter was crazy.

Does anyone know who Uncle 29 is? He just kept saying that over and over without talking to anyone and I was catching him from channel 21 to 28.

I used to receive this all the time back before the minimums few years ago but I can't get on any Kiwi remotes near where it's supposed to be either. Granted it's all the lame non-UFO recordings of Gene Scott filtered by his blowhard wife but it was a really unique transmitter location which made it a fun catch and decent propagation test.

I was listening to WWV getting ready for the test sounds and heard so SSB interference a couple kilohertz up and went to check it out on a Kiwi waterfall and found at least 6 signals just above the 10MHz frequency reference signal all in spanish and most overlapping with each other. What a wild night.
