Shortwave Broadcast / UNID 17460 AM 1753 UTC 18 Mar 2023
« on: March 18, 2023, 1755 UTC »
I'm not sure what I'm hearing here - any ideas? I can't even identify the language. Google turns up no hits for broadcasters on this frequency, just Russian military.

HF Beacons / Mixed CW / FSK beacon(?) on 4095.38
« on: February 27, 2023, 0241 UTC »
I'm not sure if this is a beacon or something else, but I'm hearing a faint signal on and around 4095.38 that transmits CW for a while, then switches to FSK for a bit, then some silence, and repeat. It's too faint and my CW skills are too crappy for me to decode what's being transmitted. Anyone know what this is?

Very faint. Can just make out that the song being played is Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police.

Frequency is more like 6934.9. S4 - S5, I can hear music but I don't recognize the song.

HF Mystery Signals / FSK signals around 27359 USB 1701 UTC
« on: November 05, 2022, 1703 UTC »
I'm hearing FSK data bursts on 27359 USB. There are others on 27355 USB as well. WTF? I'm in the US and this is a CB radio frequency - FSK data is generally not allowed. I know sometimes CB channel 23 has some FSK paging signals (I hear them all the time at my QTH) but they're nothing like this.

Utility / UNID 7614.5 AM 2235 UTC 15 OCT 2022
« on: October 15, 2022, 2238 UTC »
There's a hugely strong (S9 +10 or so) buzzing signal centered on 7614.5 right now. I've never heard anything else like it. Any idea what it might be? It sounds like jamming but it's stronger than any jamming I've ever heard before. I thought it might even be local interference but I checked a KiwiSDR in Vermont and it's just as strong there.

I'm shocked that I'm hearing this from my QTH in western MA, but it's there! Signal is much too weak for me to get an image (other than a very faint vertical black sync line) but I can hear the tones in my headphones and they're unmistakable. Signal has faded almost entirely into the noise as of right now but was stronger 20 or so minutes ago.

Longwave Loggings / Receiving LWBC in North America
« on: February 26, 2022, 1900 UTC »
I'm wondering what it takes to receive any of the longwave stations from Europe / Africa in the US, specifically at my location in Massachusetts. With my existing setup I can occasionally get the faintest of signals - I can see a carrier but not hear audio, and one time I even got faint, unintelligible audio from BBC 4 at 198 kHz (I could tell it was the shipping forecast, confirmed by checking the internet stream). I'd love to hear more, though. For those of you who've done it, what kinds of antennas worked well for you? Times of day / year? Locations (I've read that being on the coast helps a lot)? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Utility / 16806.5 2022-02-06 18:20 UTC NAVTEX - where from?
« on: February 06, 2022, 1825 UTC »
I'm receiving NAVTEX on 16806.5 kHz right now. Where is this transmitter located? It's a known NAVTEX frequency and the station identifier is C, but I can't find anything about this frequency in the HFU wiki.

Shortwave Broadcast / UNID 9666.66 AM 01:00 UTC 19 Jan 2022
« on: January 19, 2022, 0107 UTC »
Signal is a noisy S5 - S6 here. Sounds like it might be Spanish or Portuguese. Shortwave.info suggests it could be KCBS from North Korea or Radio Voz Missionaria from Brazil on 9665. The frequency being so far off suggests North Korea, and while the language sounds like it could be Portuguese, the general format of the broadcast sounds much more like commercial radio. Any idea what I'm hearing?

Shortwave Broadcast / WWCR off the air - any idea why?
« on: January 05, 2022, 0437 UTC »
I just noticed that WWCR seems to be off the air on all frequencies. I usually find them at 4840 and 3215 at this time of night, but nothing's there, so I checked their other frequencies and... nothing. Anyone know what's up?

ID and Translation Requests / Vilseck, Germany antenna site
« on: December 24, 2021, 1814 UTC »
A friend of mine sent me this Google Maps link and said they thought it might be the old AFN broadcast site. It looks very well maintained, though. Does anyone know what this is, or was?

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Some beacon on 13559.97 KHz
« on: October 10, 2021, 1704 UTC »
I'm not sure what beacon I'm hearing, but I'm definitely hearing something around 13559.97. It sounds like it should be slow Morse code but I can't hear any obvious spaces between letters. There are long dashes, then a series of shorter dots and dashes. I don't have any QRSS software handy, unfortunately. I suspect it might be NHVT in Charlestown, NH based on the LWCA beacon list and my proximity to that location, but that's just a guess.

It sounds like it might have just (17:03 UTC) gone off the air, unfortunately.

Shortwave Broadcast / WMR 25800 AM 1643 UTC 10 Oct 2021
« on: October 10, 2021, 1646 UTC »
It's fading in and out, but I'm definitely hearing music from WMR on 25800 KHz from my QTH in western Massachusetts! I've never heard the bands so wide open as they are today - at least not since the 90's! If WMR really is still running 100/250 watts then this might be my best DX catch ever!

Sorry for all the exclamation points, but this is exciting!
