I'm sure this is a known thing, but I've never paid any attention to it so I'm curious.

HF Mystery Signals / giant ~50kHz wide signal centered on 13.936

There doesn't seem to be any modulation, just a huge number of discrete carriers.  Before it popped up here, it was up somewhere around 14.800.

EDIT: It just moved up to 14.511.  Whatever it is, it seems to be avoiding the ham bands and the broadcast bands.

HF Mystery Signals / 7182-7196 kHz -- digital or radar?
« on: February 25, 2024, 0017 UTC »
Not sure what this is -- it sounds different, and looks more fine-grained, than radars I've heard before, but I'm no expert.

Also, on 7200 LSB, there's a continuous beep-beep in the background.  I know this frequency is heavily QRMed, but this sounds very similar to ALE to me.

Very weak, currently playing "The Old Man Down The Road" by John Fogerty

This shares a frequency (nominally) with New Orleans, but the fact they're a bit off, and the charts bear no resemblance to each other, gives it away instantly.  Usually when it's propagating up here to Pennsylvania, New Orleans isn't.

This is S9+ at my location, and I've never seen it before.  The closest thing to it on the sigidwiki visually is CLOVER2000, but it's listed as being 2kHz wide and these signals are both 4kHz wide (unless of course they're each two transmissions immediately adjacent, but it doesn't sound like the samples on the wiki.)

7
Started playing REM, "Man on the Moon", then cut to Simon & Garfunkel, "The Boxer".  S6-S7 in central PA.
 2347 UTC Zeke's Attic ID

8
unknown atmospheric music with occasional station ID, S9+20 in central Pennsylvania

OFF abruptly at 2036 UTC, but was dropping out occasionally while I was listening to it

9
Caught the end of a sign-on with the DJ saying something about being from Europe, then into pop music in what sounded like Russian.

Hard to tell what's being played due to deep fading.

Other / UNID SSTV on 6952 usb, 1930 utc 24 Dec. 2016

Saw a suspicious signal on the SDR waterfall and jumped on it in time to catch the last half of a greyscale test pattern with no ID.

Fired up again @1934, big S9+20 signal, biggest signal in the band by far, but still just a grey bar test pattern with no ID.  (There was a presumed CW ID at the end, but I don't speak CW and I didn't record it.)

Spy Numbers / numbers or weird pirate on 6940 AM, 0040Z 12/31/2014

Currently hearing a female voice reading four groups of five numbers, then Amazing Grace on bagpipes, repeat.

SSTV active on 14228 USB.  Their web page at http://www.qrz.com/db/W4G says 14230, but I suspect they moved down because Saturdays are the IVCA Net day on 230 -- although I haven't seen much of the net today.  They say they're going to be on 7171 also, but I haven't looked down there yet.

10/11 meters / data bursts on 11 meters
« on: December 15, 2013, 1509 UTC »
What are these data bursts I keep seeing on 11 meters?  I see them on other bands sometimes, but they seem to be almost constant on 11.  They're almost 10kHz wide, looking sort of like DRM, but they usually only last for about a second.  Once in a while one will go for 2 or 3 seconds.

Seems like every time I'm receiving NOAA-15 lately, about halfway through the pass the visible sensor will change gain (or something), going from a normal image to either almost all black or almost all white.  The infrared image is unaffected, and NOAA-18 and NOAA-19 don't behave like this.  I assumed that something was broken on the satellite, but the POES status page doesn't say anything about it.  What's going on?

General Radio Discussion / SSTV freqs?
« on: November 30, 2013, 1620 UTC »
Other than 14230 and 27700, are there any other bands that still have analog SSTV on a regular basis?  I've checked the calling frequencies that are listed in the file that you can find all over the place by googling "sstv nets", but I rarely if ever hear anything, other than digital on 7173 and I'm not really interested in digital.
