Tonight I put up a HiFER Beacon (legal under Part 15 rules) centered on 13563 kHz.  First three audio recordings emailed to (beaconID)@gmail.com will get special QSL cards.  The only hint I'll give is that the beacon repeats a 6 character call sign at 9wpm.  Let the fun begin!

Shortwave Broadcast / WWV 25MHz 13 MAY 2014 at 1430UTC
« on: May 13, 2014, 1545 UTC »
Picked up WWV 25MHz from Arizona this morning for the first time ever using my FT-817ND and MFJ 20-meter HF Stick.  Not the best antenna for the job but it worked.  Reception was pretty poor but it was still my first time picking up the station.  Anyone else pick it up for the first time??

Longwave Loggings / FFZ NDB SK
« on: April 23, 2014, 1854 UTC »
In case anyone cares, the FFZ (Falcon Field) NDB went QRT (off the air) on May 5, 2011.  I got confirmation today from Bradley Hagen, Airport Projects and Operations Supervisor.  I figured I'd post it since a number of navaid sites show it is still active.

The RF Workbench / Part 15 beacon call signs
« on: April 23, 2014, 1707 UTC »
I'm about to begin construction on a Part 15 HiFER beacon.  I was wondering what the guidelines are for picking a callsign.  I would like one of these two:
MMI - Problem is this is an NDB in Tennessee, or somewhere around there
FFZ - This WAS an NDB at Falcon Field (FFZ) but has since been removed from the airport (online directories are still showing it in service)

Would it be taboo for me to steal an NDB callsign? I would hate for someone to confuse my beacon with the FFZ NDB and put their plane down on the US60. ;D  But really, I'm struggling coming up with a good one...  Bear in mind, I'm looking for something that sounds good in morse code so not "any" combination of letters will work for me.

Thanks,

Benjamin

HF Beacons / "GNK" & "K6FRC" HiFERs 23APR2014@0150UTC 13564 kHz
« on: April 23, 2014, 0409 UTC »
Both were very weak into Phoenix/Tempe but eventually they faded in enough to copy.  Rig was Yaesu FT-817 with MFJ 17M HF Stick.  This is my first HiFER logging.

Spy Numbers / S06 15721 kHz 2014-02-04 0400-0412UTC
« on: April 02, 2014, 1914 UTC »
Strong reception of both S06 and the host broadcast station.  Unfortunately, I couldn't copy too much of S06 because the broadcast station was so strong and my FT-817 doesn't have the filters to separate them.  Not sure if it's related but shortly after the S06 transmission ended, I was tuning across 16089 kHz and heard a CW station sending numbers which ended a few seconds later.  I didn't have a chance to really listen and decode it and I didn't hear it for the rest of the time I was listening.  Curious if the two could be related....

These two beacons were only a few hertz apart.  First heard "K" on about 20047.5 kHz.  Then, a short while later, I heard "F" creep up in there.  I got audio of both and will post shortly.  Anyone know the locations of these beacons?

Thanks,

Benjamin

Utility / CW on 18979 kHz broadcasting Military excerpts
« on: March 28, 2014, 0803 UTC »
http://youtu.be/dSPtuoj21J4

Does anyone have any idea as to what this station is?  Received this CW on 28MAR2014 at 0420GMT.  From what I can tell, it's broadcasting short phrases and excerpts from military websites around the world.  Here's the code I've been able to decode so far:

"~TTG TAMARAN SUS ZEE TA 2014 DI INGGRIS )) AAA DIBERIKAN KESEMPATAN KPD PA TNI AL UTK DIK/SUS/WORKSSOP DI )) LN TA 2014 DGN JUR SBB : )) AUSTRALIA )) 1. AVIATION SAFETY OFFICER COURSE (ASO COURSE)~DITC MELBOURNE )) TMT 18 JUL SD 10 AGUST 2014 DGN KETENTUAN/PERSYARATAN SBB : ))"

The tilde (~) represents indiscernible code.
I'll post the rest of the code as soon as I finish decoding (I'm slow).

HF Beacons / Korean Coastal Station HLO 16989 kHz morse error
« on: March 27, 2014, 1511 UTC »
Has anyone noticed that when this automated beacon IDs, it sends HLO HLO SLO.  Sounds like their message has an error!  I've listened to it quite a bit lately and wasn't sure if QSB was causing me to miss a dit, but now I'm certain it's an error in their message.  Have a listen on 16989 kHz; the "wheel" sends "CQ CQ CQ DE HLO HLO SLO QSX 16MHZ K".  I'll post audio later on....

Caught this tonight on 8.580MHz.  It sounds like the Decepticons from the movie Transformers.  But really, what is this???

Found this numbers station tonight about 1kHz up from a broadcast station.  Doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard before.  Can't really tell what language.  Any ideas???

Hello all!
I thought it would be a fun project to go out and record/photograph some of my local Navaids.  I'm hoping to get one or two more this weekend.  Check out my youtube videos for the recordings:
