I bought a couple of MURS handhelds back in the fall for use between cars on a road trip in the mountains. They worked great, so I bought a couple more for general use around our 150 acre farm. Spotty cell coverage out there. Everyone can stay in touch and I've yet to hear anything else on those frequencies...other than when I've scanned in the past while I was near town. Even then, it was channel 5 and on rare occasions I'd hear some business chatter. Nothing heard on the HTs out in the country, though.

As expected, MURS (VHF) does better out in the open compared to GMRS. Ive tested MURS inside buildings and they're less effective. UHF is better for that.

Hearing weak e skip on 10 and 11 meters in Middle Tennessee just after 1 am. I saw the dx map lit up for 6 meters and the FM broadcast band, so I went into the shack to listen myself. Yep, winter e skip. I probably missed the best part of it earlier in the evening, but as of now beacons from NY and VT on 10 are coming in. A few weak CBers on 11m are in, as well.

I did notice that I could hear hifer beacons around 13.565 Mhz that normally disappear during evening hours.

I hear it on 13.5642 MHz at 1911z from Middle Tennessee on a log periodic.

Decent signal s7 into Middle Tennessee 0132z.

Hearing similar beeps and tones at 0654z on 13.559 MHz on my HF log periodic pointed WSW in Middle Tennessee. Sounds local, as there's no QSB. There's a small gas station/market about a mile in that direction. Otherwise, I'm in rural/suburban area.

Spy Numbers / Re: HM01 Loggings?

I heard it Saturday evening strong on 10345 kHz. Turned the rotary dipole broadside to the Caribbean and it got even stronger. Digital noises and a string of 5 numbers in Spanish.

I don't usually look for these stations anymore, but I happened upon it while tuning above and below 30 meters.

Fishing Drift Net Beacons / fishing beacon 160 meters
« on: February 29, 2020, 0427 UTC »
Using the online rx from Northern Utah WebSDR I can hear IX3 in weak CW on 1806 KHz. I cannot hear it on my home dipole at all. Maybe it's in the Pacific, which would explain why the Utah receiver detects it and I don't. It appears to repeat itself three times every four minutes or so.

I've heard these things on both 160 and 80 meters over the years. They're not really a nuisance given their infrequent timing and weak signals. I always viewed them as a curiosity and only knew they were fishing beacons from hearing other ops talk about them.

Tater Patch Radio 1710 AM 0216 UTC

It's mixing with the Flight 93 memorial station on fades, but otherwise a decent signal.

1715 AM

I heard "Hooked on a Feeling" maybe one song ago, but the station was weak. Seemed to go off air just now. Maybe it faded away completely.

It just reappeared on 1720 with "Eye of the Tiger" playing now.

1710 AM Radio Corsair 0625 utc

Just heard the ID for Radio Corsair and DJ commentary. He did an excellent job clearly describing the artists. Love this music. Good job. The last song is being played now.

I noticed that I can listen in USB when fading and interference get bad.

I've had this station on in the background for an hour and it's been nonstop techno. The signal has been getting stronger, although I can hear the Flight 93 memorial station underneath it.

I've only recently been listening for pirates, so I cannot say if it is Radio Corsair. From the previous comments, I'd say it's a close match.

Robin Hood Radio 6930 USB 0337 UTC

Lots of QSB, s5 to s9. Heard id and weird Christmas songs.

I tuned in to 4015 USB just to hear RFW fire back up around 0156 UTC. Not familiar with the playlist, although I like it.

I'm enjoying the pirate listening near amateur bands. I'll soon be making some more dipoles, especially for 40 and 75 meters. My current antennas are coax (75 ohm CATV) fed and cut for the CW portions.
