Shortwave Broadcast / Re: 7493 khz 2350 UTC 5/11/2017
« on: January 11, 2018, 2311 UTC »
I am listening to that station at this moment in Berlin. UTC 2300 on 11 January 2018

Very odd. It began on 7487 at 2300, and then by 2310 is switched over to 7493! We'll see if it switches again.

It is on other side of WBCQ, which is not coming in right now anyway. Oriental/exotic music in between longer stretches of dialogue in a language I don't recognise (perhaps Tibetan, if you fellows are correct).

Yes, I agree this was a non-story.

Sadly, I think this only proves the growing unfamiliarity with shortwave radio among the media and the general public.

Thanks! I will! 8)

General Radio Discussion / New Year's Eve 2016 - What's On Tonight?
« on: December 31, 2016, 1636 UTC »
New Year's Eve is a traditional heyday for the pirate radio scene. Any particular broadcasts we can expect tonight, especially on this side of the puddle?

I picked up the same broadcast here in Sweden, but even I found it to be weak. I presumed they use a directional antenna and were aimed away from my direction, but as you say, if they had America in mind, it was not the best frequency to use.

That said, I think Spaceshuttle is certainly one of the more fun pirate stations to be heard on this side of the pond.

"WBCQ is a GOOD idea tho..."

Indeed. In the end I resorted to buying time on WBCQ after all. Not the same thrill as getting involved in my own pirate stuff, but if the main idea is just to get your message out, there is a benefit to taking the path of least resistance.

Spy Numbers / Marion's Attic numbers transmissions
« on: March 31, 2013, 1124 UTC »
Are Marion Webster's obvious number transmissions to Baron von Knight valid for inclusion in this section? ;)

Thanks, Tom. I am rather late in my reply.

To be honest, I was not even thinking of a tether; rather, I was prepared to sacrifice the balloon after each broadcast. I can't believe that the idea of a tether did not occur to me. Good thinking.

On the other hand, if helium is truly at a premium these days, I may well be back to square one - tether or not.

Oh beans!  Now I feel silly.  Thanks for the clue-in.  *facepalms*

Don't feel silly. I for one learned something new from this so I am glad you mentioned it.
The law of unintended consequences has a positive side after all.  :)

Or maybe a re-run of Hour of the Time  ;)

North American Shortwave Pirate / Laser Hot Hits
« on: December 21, 2011, 1908 UTC »
Laser Hot Hits on 4015kHz for the past several nights at UTC0100 and beyond. Fading in and out using only my portable Realistic DX-380 with telescoping antenna. Presumably, it comes in much better for those with more sophisticated equipment here in Europe.

Excellent production. Does not seem like a pirate station.

I would especially interested in knowing if any of you fellows on the other side of the pond ever happen to receive Laser Hot Hits.

Whenever I am in Canada, (every 3 or 4 years or so) I notice that the CBC is indeed a source of commonality among Canadians. What Canadians have in common is that virtually none of then listen to it!

28
Ah, I see. So in short, ironically it gives itself away by trying to be too convincing.

I could buy that.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Re: KBLK 6925 AM

Thanks, that does clear it up.

Certainly I knew of Lindberg and his flying exploits. I was not familiar with his stand on the war.

I did not know that "blackface" lived on into the TV era. I am familiar with from earlier stage musical variety shows. I think even Al Jolson did some blackface. I know today people are sensitive about it and consider it racist, but I appreciate the cultural history of it in the right context. To see it on TV, however, would also have struck me as being rather off.

So much history in one little metaphor!

Just another Lindbergh (in "black face").   We need more Roosevelts.

Your metaphor is lost on me.  ???
