Keep in mind there were two SW BC stations on that frequency for much of the time HAARP was up on freq.  At one point I thought for sure I had HAARP, only to hear a voice and see audio on the waterfall.

Good signal into the Mojave Desert tonight, about S9 at 0155z.  Got Wolverine on the house sound system and just made myself an Angry Maker.  That does not make for a bad evening.

any more than root beer is beer due to the presence of that word in its name.

BTW, nice touch on the root beer analogy.

I thought it was restricted in view.  Just because root beer may sometimes be alcohol challenged and is different from beer does not mean it does not have the right to self identify as beer.  It is not a choice, it was born that way.  Embrace diversity, do not tell root beer it is not good enough to be beer or that it must keep itself mired in the role society has traditionally placed it in.

And just in case anyone who reads this wants to take it seriously or as a slam to either of the people quoted, your humor meter is out of calibration and I should probably add …   Wink   It’s a joke son…lighten up Francis!

I'm afraid that the Nazis were no form of socialism.

That whole "Nazis were Socialists" thing has never flown due to the fact it's patently false.

You missed my point.  I do not consider the Nazis socialist, I only stated that they were, by their own definition as how they named themselves, National Socialist.  It was a name only, without the recognized properties of socialism of any kind.  That is why I called it a play on words and cutting in both directions, and why I used the term "form" in quotes.

I think maybe Josh's response was a play on words, cutting in both directions.

The Nazis were National Socialist.  One "form" of socialism, although not in line with how we think of socialism today.  Yeah, they did elevate mass murder to a pretty high level.

But under Communism in the Soviet Union, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the death toll was several times the genocide of the Nazis.  The exact number will be argued endlessly, and never proven, but few doubt it was at least 3 times the Holocaust.  Another "form" of socialism.

And there are other examples of Socialist and Communist regimes with exceptional state directed high murder rates, but those two are probably the top of the heap.

It is sometimes hard to discuss history without tinctures of politics.

6  Loggings / Utility / Re: CW Numbers Station 6956 CW 0715 UTC 11 August 2017 on: August 11, 2017, 1314 UTC
I have moved this to the Utility section, since it was two way communications then regardless of the content it is not likely to be a numbers station.

This topic has been moved to Utility.

These kinds of sensational reporting stories really do get under my skin.  In this one of the venerable Buzzer they push the Dead Hand slant, completely ignoring the fact the Buzzer has broken down and quit dozens of times in the last few years, and who knows how many times before that, and we are all still here.

And wasn't the blind-and-Coke-bottle operated straight key in San Diego?

9  Loggings / Spy Numbers / Re: V13 15721khz 0400 UTC 6 Aug on: August 07, 2017, 1501 UTC
Weak with high static, couldn't copy the numbers but clearly a 5 number group cadence. Male voice until 0413.

This was almost certainly S06, not V13.   V13 is a female voice.  V13 does not, as far as I know, use this frequency.  And S06 does use this frequency at this time.

10  Loggings / Other / Re: Arecibo HF Ops in July on: July 30, 2017, 1316 UTC
They apparently ended operations sometime after 0820z, my recording ends there and they are still going strong at that point.

11  Loggings / HF Mystery Signals / Re: UNID Buzzer 5089.8ish 2302 UTC July 29, 2017 on: July 30, 2017, 1309 UTC
No, the 5089.8 kHz carrier was probably related.  When they were FMCW that carrier was gone, it only appeared during rest times between bursts of FMCW.

12  Loggings / Other / Re: Arecibo HF Ops in July on: July 30, 2017, 0528 UTC
It looks like they started operations around 2145z on 29 July, 2017, with cycled on / off CW on 5100 kHz.  Around 2245z they appeared to have gone into a radar mode of operation, possibly 20 kHz wide, 5 second duration, bursts of 200 Hz rep rate FMCW, still centered on 5100 kHz.  And later back into on / off cycling CW on 5100 kHz.  Most of these CW transmissions appear to have some kind of low frequency audio on them, whether this is intentional or the result of power mains hum is not known, I suspect intentional.

Around 0500z 30 July, 2017, they went to stepped / cycling tones on 5125 kHz.  These are very representative of what was seen in the past from HAARP.

13  Loggings / HF Mystery Signals / Re: UNID Buzzer 5089.8ish 2302 UTC July 29, 2017 on: July 30, 2017, 0522 UTC
Skip, I am pretty sure this was Arecibo in a radar mode of operation, centered on 5100 kHz.  20 kHz wide bursts of 200 Hz rep rate FMCW.  Later they went to 2 minutes on / 2 minutes off on 5100 kHz.  And later yet (0500z) they went to stepping tones.

14  Loggings / HF Beacons / Re: pip 6550 khz 1350 UTC 07/26/2017 on: July 26, 2017, 2107 UTC
Do you have an approximate duration for each pip and an interval between them?  Also, this was dead on 6550 kHz?

(edit)  When I got home about 2340z I fired up the receivers and sure enough, there it was.  This is what I call the "Pips" network that shows up from time to time.  Today it was using a 0.125 sec pip every 6.0 seconds and, as normal, on multiple sequential frequencies.

They went off air a few minutes later at 0003z, 27 July, 2017.  At this time theya re still off, but they may be back, they often turn off / on multiple times in a day.

Some past loggings of the same signals, to give ideas of what other freqs to look for.

15  Loggings / Spy Numbers / Re: M89, VC01 & V26 for June logs... on: July 14, 2017, 2049 UTC

On 8.152MHz USB at 0755z I logged a Chinese man giving out numbers in either Cantonese or Mandarin, slowly and methodically, another man replies and repeats back.  Heard this one on two or three occasions now on same frequency.  The fellow that replies is always at least three to four 's' points weaker but always audible.  The session lasts between 10 and 15 minutes.

This is possibly VC03.  VC03 is obviously live, and often has different operators.  VC03 does not have any regular freqs / schedules that I know of, almost all of my receptions of these signals tend to be random and on different freqs.  I have heard multiple networks of these signals up at one time, and occasionally they seem to be duplex, while one freq is active another is quiet, and vice versa.
