Shortwave Broadcast / 9830Khz - AM Happening Right Now
« on: September 25, 2010, 2218 UTC »
2213 UTC: 9830Khz, there's a broadcast happening right now as I type and it's just being swamped by a digital transmission. Jamming maybe? I DID hear a quick mention of Ahmadinejad by the broadcaster before the digital signal picked up really good.

I've listened on FSK mode, USB and LSB just to experiment a bit and see just where dead center is for this digital stuff.

USB, FSK,  and AM is where the signal is the strongest. You can tell there's someone talking under teh digital traffic but can't make anything out. It's not got a strong signal from either station, but the digital is loudest!

Shortwave Broadcast / China Radio International Censor Procedure Exposed
« on: September 24, 2010, 2355 UTC »
The nice people at CRI are a happy, friendly, professional team of broadcasters who love what they do, but hate it when the great wall is forced upon them. Shortwave America has run across THE ONLY publicly released recording of CRI's emergency censor tape. See it here:

Shortwave Broadcast / Khz Spacing! New Observation
« on: September 19, 2010, 0752 UTC »
This thread was originally the "Frequency Changes?" thread. Something I never stopped to notice until tonight was that there are different Khz spacings on each SW band. Back all those years ago, I noticed that it seemed as if everyone was trying to fight for the frequency and broadcasting over each other. You see, it appeared to me as if no one was playing by any sort of organized rules as it were.

I noticed tonight that for the most part, the 6.000.00Khz Band is much like the local AM MW stations, every ten Khz. Then I noticed as you get towards the end of the band, and bandwidth starts to run out, the stations can try to fit themselves in every 5 Khz between each other.

What is the band spacing on the 9.000.00Khz band, or the rest of the SW bands for that matter? Has anyone ever figured this out? Is there a resource somewhere? Is it something close to what the amateur bands have to stick to as far as bandwidth goes?

North American Shortwave Pirate / 5890Khz
« on: September 18, 2010, 2307 UTC »
I don't have a UTC time conversion chart in front of me right now, but if you tune right now to 5890Khz AM, you'll hear an unid pirate station playing "I Like The Way You Lie". Sig in Chicago is 20 over S9.

New at ShortwaveAmerica is a feature called "Retroblast" focusing on an old club that gained great fanfare while drawing the ire of U.K. Amateur Radio Authorities many years ago.

Shortwave Broadcast / Frequency Changes?
« on: September 12, 2010, 0818 UTC »
HF.org (David Hood's Site) must need SWL reports for updates badly!

I'm not being critical, but I looked up broadcasts for right now and not hearing anything for Sunday on the freqs listed. BUT, I am hearing broadcasts in between the freqs listed! I didn't make any notes, but unless my radio is off kilter (which I doubt because it's been well taken care of), I am getting activity for which there are no listings available.

Think I may have caught a pirate without ID too! Around 5020Khz, was an old Helen Ready song playing and then a spanish station took over the freq before the song could finish!

Sept. 18th 2010
Turns out my radio isn't off kilter, and that Dave's site is extremely accurate. My problem was operator error. However, I did make a discovery that we should send our reports to Dave because some of what I punched up at the frequency schedule finder was inaccurate, but for the most part it wasn't terribly off.

MW Loggings / Radio Disney Signal
« on: May 09, 2010, 2344 UTC »
Has anyone noticed that Radio Disney has a really weak signal? Just prior to Christmas of 2009 I spoke with some of their staff members at a local community event and told them that even with a commercial grade receiver and an outside antenna up high that their signal was really hard to pull out.

They said they thought there may be a transmitter in my area but they couldn't rightfully remember.

Anyone else notice this? TUne 1300Khz AM and give them a listen.

Been listening to these guys playing classic rock / 70's type material and think I heard them ID as "Radio Relevant Shortwave" Signal is 5 by 9 swinging down to 5 by about 8 1/2 with rough audio due to band conditions in Chicago, IL.
