Shortwave Broadcast / Re: CKZN 6160

I listen to CKZU Vancouver (also on 6160) regularly. It helps to live within 150 miles of its 500 W transmitter.

Just caught the last minute or so before sign-off a little after 0330

Shortwave Broadcast / Re: firedrake wiki page
« on: October 28, 2011, 0252 UTC »
It took me a while to realise what Firedrake really was (i.e., a jammer). I quite enjoyed the traditional Chinese music and listened to it for its own sake. I began to find it odd that there was no moderation whatsoever nor any station identification. I was an avid listener for several weeks before I realised what it was.

Same here and I bet we're not the only two people who did.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Very weak AM signal at 6928.4
« on: October 28, 2011, 0200 UTC »
I can discern a carrier and an occasional trace of music here in Seattle, but otherwise it's completely buried under the noise floor. Anyone else hear anything on that frequency?

Signal on 6925 better than on 6305 at this qth
Perhaps RTN is experimenting with different antennas, because the current 6925 signal (which I am zero-beating as somewhere below 6925 kHz) is not as strong as the previous signals on either 6305 or 6925 for me. Or maybe it's just my crappy antenna setup coupling RF interference again (hope to address that this week).

And just saw the follow-up from RTN. Thanks for the show!

moved to 6305kHz

Thanks! Just retuned and there they are.

Update: Vanished from 6305 as of 0323 UTC.

Update at 0326: They're back on 6924! Playing a little leapfrog tonight, I guess...

Just signed on at 0300 UTC. Very nice strong clean signal here in Seattle.

Lowe HF-150 with a crappy random wire antenna.

Update at 0306 UTC: They seem to be having technical issues; the signal just disappeared.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Re: XFM Shortwave, 6925u

Weak and barely audible above the static here in Seattle. Did just manage to copy an "XFM" station ID right now as I am typing this.

Update: "Strangelove" by Depeche Mode is discernible. Started playing at 0226 UTC.

SSTV signal @0319UT
Nothing as of 0331 UTC, so that was probably their traditional sign-out SSTV transmission.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Re: WPOD 6935 USB, 6925 USB
« on: October 16, 2011, 0324 UTC »
I presume that's what I'm hearing right now on 6925 USB here in Seattle. They ID'ed a minute or so ago but I was unable to copy it. Lowe HF-150 with a fairly crummy random wire antenna (hope to get something better up soon).

It's turning into a great night for hearing pirates here; already have heard three, and I'm listening from home in the city, not from any RF quiet location out of town.

Hardly a crushing signal here in Seattle. Barely audible above the noise.

0330 UTC update: signal has basically faded out here. Can detect a carrier, nothing more.

Just turned on my shortwave set and started tuning through the 6.9 MHz region and noticed them myself. Might have some audio clips to download later.

Weak signal, sometimes inaudible above the manmade RF in my urban location in Seattle, WA. Lowe HF-150 with a random wire antenna.

North American Shortwave Pirate / Re: Radio True North 6925AM
« on: October 09, 2011, 0428 UTC »
Just barely hearing them through the noise, with a moderate amount of fade here in Mesa, AZ. Caught a station ID at 0408z followed by Rush.

I'm hearing something on 6924.65 kHz AM right now here in Seattle. ID'ed a minute ago, but I couldn't copy it. Right now they're playing "Radio Gaga".

Icom IC-R75 with a random wire out the window.

Update: They just ID'ed again. It is in fact Radio True North.

I can detect a weak carrier on this frequency in Seattle but that's about it.
