Recent Logs from Downers Grove, Illinois

With the decommissioning of MN NDBs due to begin in earnest in 2019, I did an inventory of what seems to be on the air for comparison to what's left in the coming fall.  I bear no ill will against MN NDBs, but there are a couple of pests which block valuable offsets, and these really should volunteer to go first.

Even tho there is still a trace of DX from SA - and also GRL - the Winter DX season is officially over here.

I did a few sessions on the Bjargtangar ISL Kiwi SDR for a CLE last weekend, and I learned a cupla things:

1)  This is a fine SDR with an interesting look at the world.
2)  My spellchecker wants to correct "Bjargtangar " to "Kangaroo"

I didn't recall seeing a DGPS blasting in last weekend, and there was nothing there on 300 when I just checked.

@Looking-Glass  TY for the kind words.  This was a night of exceptional props.  The middle portion of the 14 hour long file had an astounding opening to the South.  This is the only part of the recording I have processed so far.  The early portion of the file has a great opening to the NE, and the tail end has an opening to the NW.

Okay, so here are some representative partial screen caps of some NDB captures.  Of interest are the top bar, in which the freq and timing info are noted.  The top panel gives some info on where in the 22 minute long file the best correlation occurs.  The middle panel is called the Convolution Sonogram by the author, and gives a rendering of the raw algorithmic results.  The bottom panel is the Aggregate Convolution Sonogram and is a massaged rendering of the panel above it.

These logs were all acquired using an SDR-IQ and 96" amplified whip, recorded in SDR Console V 2.3

Below is a capture of MOG 404, Montague CA, 25W at 2840 kM.  The current version of the code does not always accurately determine the beginning of the sampling interval, but it correctly puts the interval at 8.03 seconds.  This is an example of strong signal capture, and the ID is definite.

Below is a capture of FXC 327, Cayenne, French Guiana, ~300W at 5425 kM.  FXC has lost its LSB, and is currently chugging away with negative keying in its carrier as the only way to ID it.  The code gives a very positive ID, and accurate timing.

On an excellent night for Brazilians, the following was also capped.  It showed up for only a minute.  This remains a tentative log pending further investigation, but it sure looks like YUB 250 (Itaituba, BRA, ? kW at 6060 kM) miskeying as YUTS.  The timing and offset seem OK, but I am not at the point where I can claim this yet.

The code, Pskov, is the product of a couple of Russian NDB DXers, and is available for free download to members of the Groups.IO NDB List.  It continues to be upgraded as DXers offer input and looks to be a powerful addition to one's toolbox.  Users are VERY strongly advised to use a solid state drive for all file operations, and even so, processing requires a fair amount of time and dedication, but at this point appears to be a great way to go after high value targets.

Oldies from Downers Grove, IL

A couple of weeks ago, a new NDB detection code - Pskov - was released to members of the Groups.IO NDB List for evaluation.  This consists of two main programs.  The first is used to process an IQ file in a chain recorded via an SDR, creating a series of series of spectrum files via an auto-correlation algorithm.  The second program is used to display the spectrum files and enhance the detection and visibility of NDBs in a number of views via a number of controls.

This code excels in pulling out high confidence logs which would be at the limit of visibility in a .wav file browser.

This is one powerful code and highly addictive once you start digging into a file chain.  There are some neat tricks which it can do, and it functions as a great complement to normal .wav file browsing.   The ability of
Pskov to expose negative keying in a carrier seems useless on the surface, but this ability made it relatively easy to log FXC 327 (which currently has no sidebands, but keys negatively in its carrier) in the presence of a strong adjacent JMR 327 (Mora, MN) carrier.

I took another look at an older file recorded in SDR Console, and was able to pull a lot out including the following logs:
