 Eeeek Gads!  This is crazy!
How can they allow these contraptions?!?!
At 12 midnight New York time, I figured it might be an Aurora Boraellis (solar wind)

10/11 meters / Most range, less noise?
« on: December 16, 2019, 1643 UTC »
Dear experienced friends,  I seek to explore the 10/11 meters band, looking to find the ideal channel, best range, less noise.
I know...."The Holy Grail" hee hee!
Playing with AM, but too static prone.
Playing with FM, better but still bursts of static.
Tried the FM with CTCSS, but still feel like I'm struggling with background noise.
Sampled sideband like IZS4 suggested, seems to be more silent, yet curious about DX trespassers.
Do they make sideband with CTCSS??

10/11 meters / Swishing sound??
« on: December 16, 2019, 1629 UTC »
This might be a repost, but last night I left my (base radio) Optima Mk3 transmitter on 27.455 USB.
At approx 12 midnight, the radio went bonkers with a loud swishing sound.
Like a high wind blowing.  Perhaps a guy was blowing upon his microphone.
I have heard this before, now & again, but not this strong.
Please teach this newbie what this is??

10/11 meters / Re: 11 meters CB for prepping?
« on: December 12, 2019, 1430 UTC »
 Thanks everyone for your input!
YES!  I did purchase the Stryker SR-94.
Very flexible radio indeed, easy to modify and the CTCSS board was not too hard to install.
I am perplexed by the noise involved with this band, and fear we will be in competition with DX skip.
Especially as the 11 year cycle opens up - we would be flooded by freeband SSB users.
Keeping an open mind, and looking for backup power sources.

10/11 meters / 11 meters CB for prepping?
« on: December 11, 2019, 1915 UTC »
Long time prepper, constantly getting ready for the "Big One".
Figuring all cell phone/internet devices will be disabled, CB Radios will be prime real estate.
If this should occur, nobody will follow the AM/SSB gentleman rules, therefore we are investing
in flexible freeband export radios, and possible VHF too.
Recently learning about FM freeband, ie 27,415 mhz ETC.
Has anyone ever tried 11 meters FM?  CTCSS tones for privacy?

 Dear Leonard,
I too hear the swishy sounds.
Thinking it might be the solar wind?  Aurora lurking from the north?
   Annoying indeed.

10/11 meters / Re: Western NY traffic

Dear IZS4,

Thanks for the input. I am a long time VHF user looking to learn about the distance per watt ratio.
I understand that the lower frequency you go, you get farther per watt.   11 meters is curious.
The noise factor gets in the way, that is why I seek CTCSS to block.
Perhaps if I filter every nook of the radio, but these cheap electronics are rampant!  Grrrrr!

10/11 meters / Western NY traffic
« on: November 26, 2019, 1700 UTC »
Long time listener with the Rochester- Buffalo 11 meter radio traffic.  Active group talks on 30LSB during the daytime, frequents the Buffalo group on 38LSB and harasses them.   Grrrr.
Frequent talk about IMAX antennas vs Penetrator, Liniar AMPs, ETC.
I myself am curious about using FM, just like they do in Europe, channel 41 perhaps?
Anyone ever tried?  With CTCSS to combat the noise?   :-)
