Amateur Radio / Re: Thoughts on HF verticals
« on: March 11, 2020, 2106 UTC »
Dear IZS4,
I too am looking into an HF vertical.
Only interested in the 10-40meter bands only
There are two brands, Hustler & Hy Gain.
Both are near identical in size and price, 4 star ratings.
Hmmmm, I will watch this thread very close.

HF Mystery Signals / 11 meters mystery - solved.
« on: March 03, 2020, 1406 UTC »
A few months ago, I reported a strange "windy" sound upon 11 meters freeband.
You kind gentlemen referred me to the Fish Hook Welder.
I grew angry by the arrogant disregard of this welding device vs our radio band.
   -  -
Last night,  my wife and I were going to bed, enabling our bedside clock radio MP3 player.
"SWISSSHH...!" the Fish Hook Welder blared over channel 42.

Long story short, the damn Made in China clock radio emits a powerful Spurrious emission IDENTICAL.

     Damn, mystery solved!

10/11 meters / Re: 11 meter private comms?
« on: March 02, 2020, 1541 UTC »
Mr Stretchyman has this correct with quote  "PRIVATE & 11m don't quite go together...."

I was reflecting on what if?   What if the BIG ONE should strike, and all internet & cell phones should crash.
CB radio would be the temporary filler, everyone would dive into their attics and retrieve grandpa's Cobra.
All 40 channels would be saturated with AM signals, no room for SSB!!
This is one reason my wife and I choose VHF, with a CB locked in the trunk just in case. Ha Ha LOL!

Just a simple update -  channel 38 LSB-
The loud obnoxious turd here in Western NY has been exposed.   Another local station plastered his photo and address upon "11 meter box" Facebook and Twitter accounts.
A hornet nest is sturring, now the turd insists on upgrading his radio tower this spring.
I am happy to lay low and QSY if necessary.

    Resigned- 45auto

I understand this is CB, so expect anything.
The undesirable goof balls are expected, but geeezzz!
Imagine a dog park where anyone can come and play together, but this 38LSB park reeks of his urine.
Much rather find a cleaner park.

Being a licensed ham, he prefers CB due to the Rated R atmosphere. (i get it)

The kicker is his darn scanning radio, for he seeks the SSB channels for local stations 38 to freeband 555.

Because of his disability, I do not expect any changes happening soon.

I am resigned, must move on....      45auto Western NY

 Dear R4002,
Wow, I am grateful for getting the same TYT radio, proof of high quality!  Ha Ha!
Lots of great info, changing the Scrambler code is very clever too.
I have some homework to do.
   Yikes!

PS:  Yes there are annoying data bursts on MURS 1, 2 and 3.
Habitual.   I assume they are the new VHF dog collars with GPS.
Also the "Alert Zone 2" garbage.   Ugh!

10/11 meters / Man without a life....
« on: February 11, 2020, 1459 UTC »
Perhaps this is a repost, but I am worried.

There is a guy on 11 meters.....

In Western NY, there is a 40 year old guy on disability.
Living with his mother, he spends his life collecting government assistance checks and boasts about Donald Trump.
Spurred on by adversaries, he is planning on upgrading to a 75ft tower topped with a "Colossal  10K" antenna.
Gonna use 7/8 hardline coax topped with a large AMP.

His current music play and vulgar childish games will oppress all of western NY!

I am already resigned to avoiding channel 38 LSB, yet what about freeband?
Can a guy "own" a channel?    Has this happened before?

      - still learning 45auto.

Again, I wish to say Thank you to R4002.

     Great info-Print-saved accomplished!

Due to budget $$ and practicality, we opted for the VHF high band.
This will allow us to monitor our local NOAA, Fire, EMS and local 2 meter Ham repeaters.
Using MURS, and Itinerary frequencies with voice inversion for private comms.
The TYT TH-9000D offers 50 watts for $125 each.

       -- - -
We are also investing in an 11 meter freeband base station (SSB) for prepper comms.
       - - - -
The great EMP or cellular hack will occur, just a matter of time, so we are storing lots of rigs within large tin boxes, Ha Ha!

Dear R2004,  A huge Thank you for the new info!  Copy-paste-print!!!!
I am learning to avoid <30 MHZ due to the 11 year sunspot cycle, and the upcoming waves of spurrious emissions that follow.
That TYT low band mobile looks attractive, using itinerary frequencies.  Perhaps those 49 MHZ channels with voice inversion?
I know my wife and family cannot avoid a determined hacker or Big Brother, but 99% of the post anarchy mauraders will be thwarted.

    - Thanks to everyone!   Wow! -45auto in Upstate NY.

« on: January 13, 2020, 1411 UTC »
Ohhh!  You mean afixing his coax to your bumper?
I suppose pulling over curbside, running a 100ft nylon rope should do the trick.
Best done after midnight to avoid other vehicle traffic.

The hard part is locating him....Hmmm.

    -too funny   ;-)

I wish to thank the ThaDood and the others for their input!
Yes I am fully aware of the CTCSS quirks, and how some FRS dealers promote it as privacy - Ha!
  Great words of wisdom.
The 6 meter low band radios are curious, for only $125 with Voice Inversion too? Hmmmm!
At this time, I am favoring VHF radios with Voice Inversion.
Besides, there are many ham repeaters available in western NY.
I can also monitor local fire & EMS, marine radios and NOAA weather too.

    You guys are great,  45auto

10/11 meters / 11 meter private comms?
« on: January 09, 2020, 0320 UTC »
  Okay, I give up.
As a prepper, I am resigned that private comms on 11 meters will not work.
Hoping to have CB, freeband, and a private "quiet" channel using FM -CTCSS.
There is just too much noise to compete with.
If I am correct, it will become worse as the 11 yr sunspot cycle grows, Yes?
The FM CTCSS on 27,455 worked great, but when my wife called from afar, she was battling QRN.
Static, birdies and spurrious emissions are tough here in western New York!

      Still learning, friend 45auto.

We got one of those Yahoo's in Western New York.  He is a licensed ham too!
Plays music and other habitual games.
There must be a better way, Perhaps a bird can betray his residential address?
Being exposed might send him into hiding?

10/11 meters / Re: Swishing sound??
« on: December 19, 2019, 1410 UTC »
 This makes me angry.
The FCC claim we are all running out of spectrum, therefore we must use narrowband to "make space".
Yet they allow these Fish Hook Welders to operate with HUGE band hogging wattage?
My wife explains the political powers in government, pay your legislators huge cash,  do special favors and they
will clear the path for your Godzilla Radio Welders!
Like the new VHF CB channels called MURS.  If you monitor these new channels, they are getting occupied by robotic devices.
Digital dog collars, driveway alerts, ETC.        This allows good commercial business, create more jobs at the expense of VHF MURS listeners (unless you enjoy the digital hash)

Share your thoughts?   Grrrrr!    -45auto Upstate NY

10/11 meters / Re: Most range, less noise?
« on: December 16, 2019, 2058 UTC »
 Thank you DOOD and IZS4!

Yes, I am seeking a secure base/mobile between my wife and I.
Not looking to step on anybody's toes, just want an obscure channel in the CB or freeband spectrum.

God bless my patient wife, dropping the laundry, responding to my habitual hails.
She says the base radio squaks annoying static noise.    27,455 MHZ.
Recently learned about A.L.E. used by the UN governments, but we don't have that kind of money, Ha ha!
This is a hobby, nothing life threatening.
