S5 into my QTH in the Southeast.  I heard the announcer say "Radio New York Worldwide" but I assume that's just part of the original program, and not the operator.

Sorry I missed your broadcast. I was a senior in HS age 17 on that day. The principal came on the PA system saying JFK had been shot. A bit later he came back on crying saying JFK was deceased. They played the news from one of the big Chicago AM stations the rest of the school day. Later after getting home from school I called my boss at my after school job at a supermarket and asked if I had to come in to work and he said "hell yeah you still have to come in." After joining Ma Bell in 1971 I was talking with some of the old timers and they said the entire phone system went nuts that day.

I have been using online receivers because of strong data hash interference in my neighborhood that I believe is caused by Uverse squeezing up to 100mb/sec through ordinary pairs of wires. I don't have Uverse but neighbors do. williamhassig@yahoo.com

Curious it was a WNYW rebroadcast.  WNYW TV (Channel 5) call sign came into existence in 1986, they were WNEW previously.

I was in first grade when the assassination occurred.  I remember teacher/staff hurrying in and out of the class room, talking in hushed tones,  after lunch.  We were dismissed early but weren't told the reason.  While walking back home, an older friend told me the President had been shot.  Guess they figured it was too traumatic to tell the first graders but informed the older elementary school students.

The actual broadcast ID was "Radio New York Worldwide", which was a shortwave broadcaster located at Scituate, Massachusetts. The call sign was changed from WRUL to WNYW at some point in the early to mid-1960's. This station was later sold to Family Radio-WYFR. I may have been hasty in attributing the call sign as WNYW at this point in late 1963. I will research it later on and change the subject line if necessary! If anybody wants to do the research before I get a chance, feel free to comment!

Here you go, Skippy - thanks for station history.  I learned something new today.  Did not know there was a private shortwave broadcaster in NY in the 60's and that WNYW call sign had an earlier use.  From Wiki:

The station adopted the slogan "Radio New York Worldwide" and used studios in New York City and an adult contemporary format, with ABC Radio or CBS Radio hourly and half-hour newscasts and from its sister station, WRFM. On-air staff from WRFM would also have separate shifts on WRUL. There were rumors that the station was being partially controlled by the Central Intelligence Agency to broadcast anti-communist propaganda.[citation needed]

On June 1, 1966, WRUL changed its call letters to WNYW, which stood for "Radio New York Worldwide". The station attempted to do some commercial programming, but there were few advertisers because it was difficult to estimate audience ratings for the wide geographical area that shortwave stations typically covered.

In 1970, Bonneville offered to sell the station to the U.S. government for a token payment of one dollar, for use by the Voice of America, but no sale materialized.[citation needed]

In 1974, Bonneville sold WNYW. The callsign would eventually be adopted by the Fox Broadcasting Company's flagship station, WNYW (formerly Metromedia station WNEW-TV and DuMont Television Network station WABD) in New York City, in 1986.

Thanks CT-Yankee! So the broadcast relayed was actually Radio New York Worldwide at the time that JFK was assassinated. I have changed the subject line. Of interest is that the station was NOT located in New York at that time, or at any other time. It was located in Scituate, MA. Here's a fascinating full history of the station: http://www.stellamaris.no/wnyw3.htm

How about that? Yankee is a year older than I. I'll have to file that bit of info away.

JFK wasn't well liked around these parts, his Daddy was a gangster and JFK was a card carrying agent of the Pope O' Rome. Throw in  interrupting the Three Stooges and Mighty Mouse nearly every day after school, and there were squadrons of kiddy commando's training in   empty lot's to take that guy out.
