The Voice of Russia Mystery Continues…..
« on: December 08, 2013, 1041 UTC »
Rumours of the Voice of Russia's demise have been circulating for months now. Virtually nothing has come out of the state broadcaster itself, but rather mumblings have been published in other external news sources. So…..here's another one - but with a somewhat different slant. This one claims that VoR is wanting to INCREASE its Kurdish language service, not decrease it or close the service down! It really makes me wonder what the REAL facts are about VoR's future!

Read about it at:

What is going on with the good Comrades at VoR? Sometimes I wonder if they are caught in a power struggle of some kind...

You know, the way they are going, one would only be half surprised if they suddenly started relaying my shows...

I'm not sure VoR staff knows what is going on. I suspect any decisions about the future of the station are made much higher up than at the VoR staff level. When first reports of closure came out, a few DXers wrote to the station but staff seemed unaware of any proposed changes. They haven't endorsed nor denied any changes. Speculation abounds! Great fodder for gossip hounds though!  ;D

Further to the above:

Today, a report from the Kremlin - http://www.kremlin.ru/acts/19805 - states that Putin has signed a decree that calls for re-organisational change of state-owned media, and the "elimination" of VoR (along with other divisions). However….it does not say that Russia is leaving shortwave! Interesting.

It's interesting to note that nowhere in the new media Act signed by Putin does it say that the shortwave service has gone. Nor in the VoR statement released today was there any mention of the end of the SW services. But the name Voice of Russia has changed! It seems to be a re-organisation of the services under a new umbrella organisation.

I haven't heard them ID as "Voice of Russia for a while now. They seem to call it "Radio VR".

I can only assume that everything has been lumped together to keep it under Putin's control - he is ex-KGB after all.

Do we know the actual time for the last Transmission? I'll raise a glass to them

according to the ARRL web site the VOR will be off the air on 1/1/2014 so I must assume (there's that word) the last date of transmission would be the last day of December of this year...

But who knows????

I wondered what would be the last language broadcast and at what time will they cease transmitting?

Somebody should call them up after they shut down and thank them for all the years

So does Radio Ukraine International. 3985  5970  6145  etc. They have been off shortwave for years.  They are known as "wooden registrations" sort of a cover your ass thing. I don't put much faith in HFCC registrations as an indication of actual broadcasting.

Radio Kiev turned into Radio Ukraine in about 1991 or 1992. Prior to that it was a part of Radio Moscow. They had a couple of 1 megawatt transmitters as I recall. I could always hear them well but I don't know if they were actually running 1000 KW. They shut down about 3 or 4 years ago when the state stopped funding them. I remember the male announcer with a deep voice who would speak slowly & distinctly & he could be understood in all but the worst propagation conditions.

btw I am listening to Voice of Russia on 9395 as I type this & they just ID'ed as "The American Voice of Russia".  Thats a new one.
