NQC, I agree. What's odd about this one is it actually gets here. For many years, I've been trying to get these TIS stations and it has been exceedingly rare, except for a local MnDOT station on 530 kHz (WPAL378).

A number of years ago Undercover Radio showed up on 1710 and was much better programming than the TIS stations.

Hey Skeezix,

TIS stations are pretty rare at the apt, but on the car radio when cruising around Eastern MA ( near or "far"), I get a few- "at times".

I think 389 may be the only active 1710  station in the US. It is not enough of an issue here, so I can use 1710 (preferred) or other holes in the X band for my transmitter (which is off air for now). I can cover the entire band but obviously folks like to run as high as possible re antenna length. I have to run with with a less than 1/8 wave / loaded :-[( for now anyways ). So although I can use the transmitter in the "test"mode across the band,  getting any type of range  really has to be done in the X band.

Again , I'd like to see them go bye bye so that "others"   around the country could use 1710 , but I am not counting on it.

The armory in Springfield, MA is also on 1710. Less power, slightly distorted audio, but never in a techinal difficulites loop.  :D :D :D

The Springfield Armory on 1710 is a federal allocation as it is a national historic site. You can see signs telling you to tune in when you are on the MA Pike.

There are several TIS stations on 1710 kHz. I filed a FOIA request to get all the TIS station info, including the federal TIS stations which are *not* in the FCC database.

They're all in my DX ToolBox program for Windows and macOS, 1658 TIS stations at latest count: https://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/ham-shortwave-radio-propagation-software.html

Huh... This site use to work in TIS Searches,   https://www.fcc.gov/media/radio/travelers-information-stations-search
It no longer does, apparently.
I was asked, yet another weird question, of how I would like to be buried, when I finally bite the big one. The answer was actually pretty easy. Face-down, like a certain historical figure in the late 1980's, (I will not mention who, but some of you will get it, and that's enough.) Why??? It would be a burial that will satisfy everyone: (1) My enemies will say that it will show me where to go. (2) On the same point, I can have my enemies kiss my butt. (3) It will temporarily give someone a place to park a bicycle. See??? A WIN / WIN for everyone.

Hey All,

I also vaguely recall another 1710 allocation for a casino in AL or MS. Don't recall from where but I believe  I saw one listed for such use.

It would be interesting to find out which ones are active and which are silent.

Again , compared to the numerous  Info stations on other frequencies, 1710 seems quite rare. Not sure why.

I suppose 1710 doesn't HAVE to be clear so that "others" could use it.It would be "nice " though. Maybe there are enough holes in the X band for most folks to use in most areas.
