I had decent enough reception – the message was disregarded after where you have it ending.

MDK2: Thank you for the correction on the call sign. You are correct. My spelling error.

Note: My personal opinion, but for the past week or so it appears that one of the NCS is operating with some new equipment on a digital link. I have noticed this link break-up on several occasions where the audio was unreadable. I also find that the audio is very tinny sounding. Additionally, during the 19:00Z - 19:11Z broadcasts other operators could be heard in the background transmitting FDMs (on other frequencies?). I think that the old analogue links were much better. When those transmitters came up they exerted a sense of global superiority and the circuit noise kept the squelch open on the receiver.

I think they're saying "Tone Deaf" not "Tone Death." Was just listening at about 1706 UTC today (06 FEB 2024).

It seems to have begun after the "Prick 160" (PRC-160?) tests on January 24th. This could be a coincidence, but the spec sheet is available online and someone more knowledgeable could comment on whether it's actually related or not. I think it is indeed either something brand new (i.e. PRC-160), or else a full implementation of whatever method they have been using to broadcast the "communications tests" to Mainsail once or twice a day (but not every day) for at least the last two years.

I have found these transmissions to be significantly clearer to listen to with the KiwiSDRs I use in central/east coast US as well as in western Canada. I did also notice the 'glitchy' link break-up occur a few times, but those seemed to begin on a Friday afternoon – typical for a problem to kick up right as the weekend starts, so it probably couldn't be investigated until Monday (yesterday). Since apparently looking into it, the 'glitchy' of some of their messages seems to have been resolved.

There is indeed a very obvious thing – that the clarity of these messages, alongside the lack of blaring carrier signal, makes it much easier to pick up conversations going on in the background of message read-outs. How they'll deal with this – and there's obvious reason they'll want to – remains to be seen but until they do there is every potential to hear things of interest we otherwise might never have an opportunity to.

Here is why the new HFGCS digital equipment may appear to sound strange. First, it has no lower band-pass filter. As can be seen in the image bellow, the audio extends well bellow the centre carrier by at least 3 kHz. The USB is also approx 6 kHz wide. Military HF stations typically operate with 3.2 kHz or 3.6 kHz filters as the extra bandwidth is required to support secure communications equipment and various STANAG data modes. In either case, USB and LSB band-pass is respected, which in this case is clearly not.
