West Coast U.S. Pirate Radio?
« on: March 14, 2026, 0449 UTC »
I wonder why there doesn't seem to be any West Coast Pirate Radio Stations. There's never anything in the loggings section at say 8:00 p.m. Pacific time on a Saturday night.

Funny, this question was asked almost a year ago to date on the board.  As mentioned in my response, I spent about a year's worth of time in the Bay Area between 2012-2022 and found slim pickings for pirates.

But here's the post from last year:

Things have changed a little since then, there's some new stations that are definitely west coast, or at least well west of the usual "500 miles around Pittsburgh", based on who is hearing (or not hearing) which stations.

Re: West Coast U.S. Pirate Radio? Mainly FM'er, not SW.

SW Pirates never seemed to catch-on out West. FM seemed the rage more out that way. The last pirate I remember QSL'ing was Union City Radio, back around 1993, on 15.050MHz AM. A very weak reception, as I remember, but did snag a QSL card from them. Reportedly, they were somewhere in The Rocky Mountains area.
The best two statements of advice that I've ever gotten are from my brother-in-law in the early 1990's. 1st one, when I bought a used '89 Olds Cutless, my bro-in-law said, "Congratulations!!! You've just bought a deficit!". The other, was on a work environment, " No matter where you go, it's going to be f***'ed -up!". No truer words have been spoken.

Band Aid Radio and Subterranean Radio definitely more audible here out west (I'm near Seattle) than on the East Coast, as is B Side Radio.

Right now, in fact, I'm listening to WWW, a station that first appeared Tuesday night and is reaching my radio directly here.

There's apparently a SW pirate out of the Vancouver / Lower Mainland region of BC who's active.  I might have heard a bit of his programming once, maybe 6-8 months ago.

In the early 80's there was KVHF out of the LA area, very strong, high quality signal. And Green River Radio, which may have been out of Central Cal somewhere.  Both of those are long gone.

Pirate radio on SW seems to be more of a Midwest thing.
An AM radio Boombox DXer.
+ GE SRIII, PR-D5 & TRF on MW.
The usual Realistic culprits on SW (and a Panasonic).
