1080 kHz unid classical music
« on: November 20, 2008, 1026 UTC »
An oddity for my area...
11/20/08 0400-0600 UTC (11/19/08 10 pm-midnight local), hearing classical music drifting in and out between the usual local KRLD news/talk on 1080 kHz.  No ID, nothing on FCC or other databases indicating a classical station on this freq.  Also heard partial ID for either KMOX or WMOX, neither of which is listed on 1080.  Weaker signals overtaken by KRLD after midnight local/0600 UTC.  (N. Central TX - heard on both Palstar R30C with passive coax loop and Sony ICF-2010 with internal ferrite MW antenna.)
That li'l ol' DXer from Texas
Unpleasant Frequencies Crew
Al: Palstar R30C & various antennae
Snoopy: Sony ICF-2010
Roger: Magnavox D2935
(Off-air recordings.)

Sounds like CBC radio from Canada drifting in over top. We're one of the few left with classical on AM.

Would also explain why it's not in a FCC database.

Peace!

I was going to say the CBC,too. I here them when tuning between WBZ and KMOX late at night.

I think they're coming from Windsor,Ont.,but I'm not 100% on that?

Thanks, folks.  Glad to know it's not just a spur or phantom signal.  Heard again last night (11/20-21/08, 0400-0600 UTC), no positive ID.  Seemed to close out at midnight my time (Texas) with what sounded like operatic piece in Spanish.  So now I'm wondering whether this is a Mexican based station?  I used to hear a Mexican based classical music station near 9600 kHz AM, tho' they haven't been audible for several months.

Anyway, apparently my fugly homebrewed coax loop is working well with the Palstar for MW DXing.  Between beer and radio, this should keep me outta trouble this winter.

Several minutes of audio recorded between 0400-0600 UTC, 11/21/08: http://www.mediafire.com/?jtwnkk2a2cn

I checked the on-line database and could not find a CBC tx on 1080.

That doesn't mean there isn't one.

Maybe it is Mexico?

But they usually chatter a lot :-\

I checked it last night about 11 pm. EST and got a wrap of a University of Connecticut women's basketball game with a booming signal. That's a new one.

Other than WBZ I never hear anything on MW from New England. Seemed like the entire MW band was favoring stations to my N.NE. last night.
