Equipment / Re: Outdoor vs. Attic Antennas
« on: July 05, 2014, 1644 UTC »
For receiving, an outside antenna is preferably to an inside/attic antenna for a few reasons:

First, an inside antenna is more likely to pick up interference from electronic devices in the house. Computers, TVs, appliances, switching power supplies on virtually everything today, etc. This isn't a problem for transmitting, of course.

Second, the received signals can be attenuated somewhat by the house itself, especially if there's a lot of metal. If you've got aluminum siding, you're might essentially be inside a Faraday Cage.

Third, with an outside antenna, you probably have a better chance of getting it higher in the air, if you have a lot of tall trees in your yard.

Fourth, you can usually have a larger antenna antenna outside.

This is not to say that an antenna in the attic can't work, just that you'd probably get better results from one outside.  What are the dimensions of your lot, and where you do have trees?

SDR recording catch.
Signed on 6960 LSB at 0456 with music, pretty weak here, SIO 211-222.  Off at 0503.

Back on 6974 at 0508, sounded a bit weaker than earlier until 0515 when the audio came up a bit.
Off at 0530, no obvious ID heard here.

SDR recording catch. 0321 sign on, somewhat weak, but stronger than usual for KCPR here out east.
Two SSTV transmissions, at 0406 and 0430, here is the latter which was slightly better quality:

SDR recording catch, mostly an S8 signal here.

The HFU has an extensive list of pirate radio station email addresses here: http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Pirate_radio_station_email_addresses

SDR recording catch. Signed on at 0112 with an OM talking, rather weak. Sounded like synthesized speech.

Upon checking the SDR recording, this was in LSB, and there was some of the USB bleeding through.
Seemed to end at 0100z. Some other peskies could be heard a few minutes later.

FYI, Your HFU message board account / password info now works with the wiki, so it's easier for users to create and edit wiki pages.

I updated the sticky message with the info: http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,17562.0.html

General Radio Discussion / The HF Underground Wiki
« on: July 05, 2014, 0020 UTC »
This may be the best kept secret of the HFU, but we have a wiki. In the past, it's been somewhat difficult to use, as it had a separate account system. Now, it uses the HFU message board account system, so you can log in with your HFU user name and password.  The wiki is for creating content for virtually anything radio related. Operators can create a page about their station. Listeners can post QSL card images. There's also articles about various SWBC and utility stations, receivers, software, and assorted technical topics. If it's somehow related to radio, it's welcome on the wiki.

You can access the wiki here: http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Main_Page

If you have not created content on a wiki before, you may wish to read up on media wiki editing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing and https://help.wikispaces.com/Editing+a+Page have some basic information.

If you have questions, feel free to ask, either here or on IRC.

I received mine as well, thanks X-FM!

Heard here as well on the SDR recording. Good copy on the CW, the voice was somewhat weaker.

I've heard this, or similar, in years past. Thanks again for this interesting transmission!

SDR recording catch. I heard an ID that sounded more like "Cave Man Radio" than "Man Cave Radio"

0147 Sign on with repeated IDs, sounded like Cave Man Radio, but the echo effect made it difficult to tell
0148 Parody ad for homeland security
0150 Repeated IDs, OM talking
0154 Pink Floyd "Welcome To The Machine"
0201 "Another Brick In The Wall", then OM talking
0203 Alice Cooper "Clones"
0206 Off
