Software / SDR Console Peview 7, October 23rd, 2017
« on: October 25, 2017, 1653 UTC »
Preview 7, October 23rd, 2017

This kit expires on October 24th, 2018.

What's New

A lot of new/updated features, for example:

CW Skimmer, a major part of the logic was wrong http://dev2.sdr-radio.com/Software/3rd-Party/CWSkimmer.
Support for the latest Airspy Server network logic.
Favourites Tree – see Favourites pane.
Memories.
Changed / enhanced the spectrum algorithm – Ribbon Bar, View, Smoothing – Hang & Decay now the default. Using Hang & Decay the smoothed spectrum is now closer (indeed quite close) to the actual signal levels.
Fixed Ettus B210 support.
Schedule

Beta 1 - December 2017 with Data Anayser.
Beta 2 - January 2018 with Remote Server.
Release - March 2018.

Known Problems

External radio possibly still not working properly when using the IF output, this is high on the to-do list
There are no guarantees at all - this is a taster of what's to come. The kit expires on December 13th, 2017.

Equipment / ALA 100LN perfect size & shape
« on: October 24, 2017, 1400 UTC »
I purchased around six week ago a ALA 100LN from Wellbrook.

My main target with this antenna is the Mediumwave band.
The antenna bearing is 278° - 98°.

Since I installed the antenna I tinkered with the loop height and circumference.

1. Setup - 10' height and 26' apart = 72' circumference
Signals where way to strong (S9+40 / S9+60) with attenuation (10dBm) and I observed overmodulation on a lot of stations.

2. Setup - 10' height and 20.5' apart = 61' circumference
No significant changes to the first setup. I dropped the signals by 5 S-points at best.
The overmodulation got a little better on the local stations but i was still not happy.

3. Setup - 13.1' height and 13.1' apart = 52.4' circumference
The local stations are now down to S9+10 /+20 with out any overmodulation.

Now I am wondering if I found the optimal size / circumference for the loop.
What circumference are you guys using on the ALA 100LN?

Did anyone try a triangle setup as it is mention in the Wellbrook documentation?

Overall I am curious what treasures I will catch during this MW DX season with the new Antenna.

Equipment / Re: RG58 vs. RG174 vs. RG316 for Receive Only
« on: October 24, 2017, 0914 UTC »
From my prospective, three factors are interesting when looking into coax.
The shieling, attenuation & impedance.

Here a with the mentioned coax comparison:

Shielding
RG 58/U  (20AWG) - 78% coverage with Bare  Copper Braid Shield
RG 174/U (26 AWG) - 90% coverage with Tinned Copper Braid Shield)
RG 316  (26 AWG) - 95% coverage with Silverplated Copper Braid Shield
H155 - 100% Duofoil + 80% coverage with Tinned Copper Braid Shield

Attenuation (dB/100 meter)

Coax         10 Mhz     20 Mhz     28 Mhz     50 Mhz
RG 58/U    4,5           6,5            --             10,4      (50 Ω)
RG 174/U  9,5           13,5          --             18,5      (50 Ω)
RG 316     8,2                            17,0         19,2      (50 Ω)
H155        3,0            4,2            4,9          6,5        (50 Ω)

This summer I change all my coax from RG 58 to H 155.
So far, I am pleased with the change. My noise floor went down by 5-8dB depending on the antenna.
The cost for the H155 is almost double, compared to the RG 58. However, in my situation it was worth it.
A must in my opinion is also good grounding of the coax shield and a common mode choke in each coax line.
