Cool article, thanks for sharing.  It is interesting how things have come full circle in some ways.

Hearing some music with a female lead now, about S8 here.
A new motown song at 0022z

0030z a song with syncopated guitar riffs that smack of Interpol.
0037z clear WMID ID
0041z signal peak produced something that sounds like The Cure.
0043z strong WMID ID, signal now around S9 with audio out to 5KHz.  Punk rock track follows ID.
0047z ID 'WMID, John T Arthers' favourite radio station'  Into Seals & Croft's 'Summer Breeze'
0100z WMID ID and off (QRT)

Nice audio with good bass on peaks, some typical UTE interference on 6947 KHz from time to time.

Thanks for the show!

The RF Workbench / Re: Higher power design.
« on: December 11, 2015, 0745 UTC »
I personally wouldn't bother with rectified mains until you get to the 500W carrier level or so, simply from a safety and cost standpoint.  Switching supplies are so cheap, you can string 3 of them together to get 150VDC, quite enough for 500W CW.  Also above that power level, power factor correction becomes compulsory for efficiency.  It also helps reduce mains hum in the audio, unless your mod has humbucking.

BTW 'inverting' over here means running a power inverter to get 120VAC from 12VDC, hence why I asked about mains power.

Considering the number of AM's & FM's out there doing things that are blatantly illegal, I'd say they should have better things to do.

Assuming 400W+ PEP capability, your going to need a supply voltage of at least 65V to deliver the peak power.  I assume this will be a line-powered affair?  I suppose you could use a large boost converter to get 12V up to 65V if battery operation is required.

100W carrier I think would satisfy most ops, particularly if it sounds better than anything they've previously used.  You could probably make the PCB design somewhat universal, so that more/larger fets could be added for more power, with the increased supply voltage of course.  The 100W level is also nice because you can use passive cooling, no fan noise.

And now for the next illusion, make the same box do SSB ;)  It can be done.

The problem with offering something of that scale for sale is that the price point will probably be beyond the reach of most of us, myself included.  I'm working on something similar in my free time, but it will probably be a year before I have something to show for it.  In the mean time, I gotta keep the bills paid ;)

Huh? / Re: Why us millennials are scared
« on: December 06, 2015, 0835 UTC »
I think the bigger problem is the inmates are running the asylum.  You also have a media that is sensationalizing events to further their numbers and push their agenda.  With freedom comes a cost, which I am willing to pay to be free.  The risk of being involved in a mass shooting or terrorist attack in this country is practically zero.  I would rather experience a slight rise in that risk than have half of my rights and privacy taken away with the promise of safety from a government that can't deliver.

I hate the term 'millennial', not all of us are facebook-whoring-phone-dragging-numbskulls.

Just my three cents ;)

Huh? / Re: God isn't fixing this. (A needed apology)
« on: December 06, 2015, 0751 UTC »
Interesting thread.  God may not fix this, and neither will more gun control.  Criminals and terrorists will always find ways to get the firepower they want, regardless of the standing laws.

In addition to that, gun homicides are sharply lower than their peak in 1993, so says a study put together with government data. http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2013/05/07/181998015/rate-of-u-s-gun-violence-has-fallen-since-1993-study-says
