0435z sign on, into a YL singing.
0439 OM with Global Warming Radio WGWR ID and contact info.
0442 Off

SDR catch, 0403 sign on with a weak carrier. Some faint audio heard around 0418z

More audio heard around 0501z.
Off at 0507z

This one was forecast to track pretty much overhead, as was Tropical Storm Andrea. So I moved the dish antenna inside and aimed out the window, then switched to the discone when the sonde got north of me. So the results are not as good as yesterday.

Pretty close to the predicted path at first, but the landing was way off.  The burst was at 27.755 km. The parachute seemed to work today.

Today's actual path:

Came on at 0127z with some music, sounded like a YL singing? Really tough to tell.
Possible announcement at 0128z
Carrier off at 0129z for about 90 seconds, back on just before 0131z with what sounded like the same program as before. Then silence at 0132z for a minute, and carrier off at 0133z.

About an S7 signal, but the modulation seemed low, and there was a bit of static from TS Andrea. So very tough copy overall.

I think the chute didn't open correctly. Here's the altitude plot:

The descent is much quicker.

Here's the map of the received sonde locations:

And the CUSF predictions:

I got set up earlier, and was in a different location, so I could gather data earlier in the launch. Also the last data packet was at an elevation of only 5.9 degrees, impressive with all the trees I was shooting through. I sometimes had to move the antenna a few feet either way to get through a better break in the leaves. Still a huge improvement over previous attempts.

Oh and here is a plot of the ascent / descent rate over time:

SDR recording catch. Sign on at 0432z, weak carrier noted.
Music heard starting around 0449z.
RTN ID at 0456z.

I am getting short AM transmissions with an OM voice. I wonder if this is related to the recent weirdness on 6914?

12893
Just tuned in at 0007z to hear some music, S7 signal.
Pseudo Radio ID at 0011z.

Checking the SDR recording, it looks like sign on was 2349z on 3 June 2013.

For today's monitoring, I was outside, rather than inside the shack with the dish aimed out the window.

Here is the map showing path the sonde took. Signal was acquired when it was east of BWI airport. It then tracked west to Columbia, then east to South Baltimore, where it was lost:

Plot of altitude:

I actually started to hear the signal earlier, but it took a moment to get everything set up, this was my first reception with the antenna and radio outside. Much was learned, most of it obvious:

1. Being outside with the antenna results in much better results than inside.
2. The Icom R-7000 is far more sensitive than the AOR 8200. No comparison.
3. Foliage on the trees really cuts down on the signal strength. I observed the signal increase when the antenna was aimed at an open spot between the trees. Reception will likely be much better in the winter.
4. The modified Wifi antenna is really directional. This, as Adrian Monk would say, is both a blessing and a curse. Movement of just a few degrees causes the signal to drop out. The current set-up does not lend itself to easily adjusting the elevation, and even the azimuth is tricky.
5. It's annoying to have to haul gear outside to listen to a sonde. I need to figure out a good permanent location for the antenna, a way to rotate it in 2 axes, and feed the signal back to the shack with minimal loss.
6. I was able to pick up the 1681.478 MHz signal from several GOES weather sats while I was outside with the setup, although it was quite weak.

This is the modified Wifi dish antenna. Yes, it's attached to a piece of PVC pipe mounted in an old umbrella stand:

I tried out the new dish again this morning (still from inside aimed out the window) and had pretty good reception, all things considered. Especially since I have very tall trees directly in the path.

The dish is designed for Wifi (2450 MHz), I modified the feed dipole, lengthening it for use at 1680 MHz. It has a claimed gain of 24 dB, and from my experience is quite directional.

Here is a map of the path based on the captured GPS data:

The straight line from Muddy Branch to Rockville is due to lack of data during that time period. That was the beginning of the capture period.

Here is a plot of the altitude:

After the burst, the sound of the signal immediately changed and the signal level dropped a lot, I guess due to the sonde tumbling before the chute opened. By the time it did, the signal was already too weak to decode, although I could hear it until 1300 UTC.

When it stopped decoding (just after crossing back into Virginia) it was almost exactly 50 miles away.

My plan for this week is to set up the dish on some sort of tripod and use it outside.

Noted before 0200z and well after 0530z, although much weaker later on. It sounded like an open mike? I could heard an OM talking, and there was always a "rushing audio" sound when he was not, not sure what language.

Did anyone else catch this on their SDR recording?

Just signed on, S6 signal here.

Sending short messages in MCW. Weak, I have not tried to decode any yet, but I suspect it is related to the transmissions we heard on 6915 a few months ago: http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,9042.0.html

I'm hearing some faint music.
BBR ID at 1635z.

About S3.

OM talking, I think I heard an ID, but I could not pull it out of the noise. Op then said he'd play some more music.
WSBR ID at 0042z.
