16/06/2017 - forgot to tune in to any HM01 broadcast. I don't know if we got May 19th's set one last time or a whole new set, because there are all new numbers and files for 17 June. If a new set was sent, I also don't know if the number sets for 17 June advanced the final digit or not. However, since no number set on 17 June ends in one, it's safe to say that the number groups (save the final digit) and files sent on 16 June don't include any group or file that transmitted just on that date.

Once again missed the broadcasts, but only partially for lack of trying. I was working and unable to catch the 1600-1800 broadcasts, as well as 2100, but I did try to get 2200. It wasn't on. Strangely enough, on 23 June, I found nothing at either 2100 or 2200, and I tried all frequencies used at those times.

Alerted to this by Token. S9+10 peaks early on, but faded to the noise floor for most of it. Still on as of 0432.
0344 "Days of Hard Life"
canswl is right - the modulation does suck. I recorded part of this broadcast and went back over it later, and had S9+30 peaks that could hardly be understood.

Timing noted by OZDXer on Ryver chat, I didn't tune in til 0019. "Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now," artist unknown. BOOMING signal, one of the strongest I've ever seen. Off at 0020.
0147 "The Full Bug" VH (thanks davep!)
0149 OM with email, but very bassy so I couldn't understand it  :( Clever Name Radio ID per JoeFlips (see his comment for email)
0149 "In The Garage" Weezer
0153 Clever Name Radio ID, clevernameradio@hotmail.com (understood it that time) into "Some Chords," Deadmau5
0200 "Strobe (Michael Woods Remix)" Deadmau5
0202 "Everyday Normal Guy" Jon Lajoie
0206 "High as F%#k" Jim Lajoie
0209 "Candle in the Wind" Elton John
0210 suddenly off

0059 Station ID (nice signal, SIO 333)
0100 The Ants Go Marching tune When Johnny Comes Marching Home
0102 OM speaking
0105 Johnny Comes Marching briefly, into "Ohio" Neil Young
0108 "One Tin Soldier" can't remember the artist (signal decreased suddenly near start of song, recovered a couple of minutes later)
0112 signal dropped down again, sounds like someone speaking but can't make out anything
0113 signal back up, YL speaking talking about civil war
0114 Johnny Comes Marching briefly into another song, sounds like a protest spiritual of some sort, Shazam not recognizing it (Banks of the Ohio per OZDXer)
0118 sounds of protest
0123 Johnny Comes Marching briefly into YL speaking
0127 Johnny Comes Marching, then music. Very faint now, I thought it was off but saw others reporting music, and then realized I could hear it faintly myself.
0131 Johnny Comes Marching, then YL speaking, followed by OM speaking
0135 Johnny Comes Marching, into "Holy Wars" Megadeth (h/t JoeFlips for song ID)
Signal suddenly came way up to an SIO 444 at 0140.
0141ish "Holy War" Lords of the New Church
0146 Johnny Comes Marching, into OM reading news.

Thanks for the show!

I should have tried tuning in earlier (this broadcast begins at 1300), because it was S9+20 with minor fading when I tuned in. Ordinarily this signal is impossible, given the low solar activity and early morning time it's transmitted. And it did fade back into the static by 1400.

Copying signals on most CB channels that I pause at, which is rare. Aside from the Super Bowl channel, where I know that I'm getting signals from several states away, it's hard to tell where transmissions are originating. I'm not really close to any truck routes, which is why I seldom hear much when I scan this band. (I don't have an external antenna for signals above 21 MHz, so I'm dependent upon the Sat 750's built in whip.)

So far, not hearing anything on 26.585, which seems to be Mexico's main calling channel and kind if their version of the Super Bowl.

I don't mean SSTV. I'm speaking of the images that some pirates have recent started sending that can be seen in the waterfall displays of those using SDR's.

I like tuning into the VOA radiogram, and they send images of the VOA and Radiogram logos. I've only ever been able to see those in the waterfall display of Fldigi, however, not SDRuno. I don't know if this is due to my settings, the software itself, or something else. And so far I haven't observed any of the images that some pirates like Burn It Down Radio, Radio Time, and Pee Wee have recently sent to identify themselves or to give shout-outs to HFU listeners. Timing and the typically fair-to-poor signal strength are doubtless factors, but I'd like to know what I need to do to see these if I'm lucky enough to be viewing the waterfall when they send something, or playing back a SDR recording. (Would they appear in Fldigi's waterfall if I had that up and running?)

Thanks for your help.

But he is looking at continuing broadcasts with WRMI.

Currently posted on their website:

Quote
I will retire from the Voice of America on June 23, after 32 years as audience research analyst and broadcaster.

I was hoping to continue to produce VOA Radiogram as a contractor.  I approached various BBG and VOA offices. They all declined.

And, therefore, the last VOA Radiogram will be the weekend on June 17-18

Money is not the issue.  I am willing to work cheap.  My main interest is to be authorized to continue the show and maintain a VOA email address, so that I can keep in contact with the audience.

The irony is that, after retirement, I will finally have time to answer your emails – but I will no longer have access to the VOA email system to do that.

But, the show must go on.  In addition to the four weekly transmissions via the BBG North Carolina transmitting site, VOA Radiogram is also broadcast on WRMI in Florida twice on Sundays. I can hardly allow those half-hour slots to be filled by light recorded music. So, beginning the weekend of June 24-25, a program similar to VOA Radiogram, but with a new name and email address, will be broadcast by WRMI.

More about the demise of VOA Radiogram, and the emergence of its replacement, in the weeks to come.

Huh? / Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden, dies at 52
« on: May 18, 2017, 1252 UTC »
Chris Cornell, the powerful, dynamic singer whose band Soundgarden was one of the architects of grunge music, has died at 52.

Mr. Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit, said his representative, Brian Bumbery, in a statement that called the death “sudden and unexpected” and that said the singer’s family would be “working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.”

Mr. Cornell was born in 1964 in Seattle and helped form Soundgarden 20 years later. Sub Pop, then a fledgling record label, released the group’s first single, “Hunted Down,” in 1987, as well as two subsequent EPs. The group’s debut album, “Ultramega OK,” came a year later.

Set SDR to record per announcement by BID.

1003 BID ID into "Hello There" Cheap Trick (live) - signal was S9 on the meter, light noise, occasional QRM from OTHR bursts.
1006 "Peace Train" Cat Stevens - signal weaker, S7-S8 and a little noiser for that. Back up to S9 by 1008.
1010 "Peace of Mind" Boston - S8-S9 with some selective fading.
1015 "Heaven Beside You" Alice in Chains - at the noise floor which was about S6 here with fades below that level. Only faint carrier detectable by 1017, occasional bits of audio floating up from time to time.
1020 OM speaking? possible but uncertain.
1021 rock music below the noise floor, fading up by 1022 but not well enough to make out.
1025 "American Idiot" Green Day - signal fair, S7-S8, but faded down to the noise floor by the finish @ 1028.
1032 trace carrier remained visible until this time, so either completely faded or QRT by then. I kept the recorder on til 1103 and nothing showed up.

Scrolling around, found an SSTV transmission in progress.
0125 SSTV ended, apparently QRT

15575 kHz AM, 5/5/17, 14:20 UTC

Good copy, S9+10 peaks on the meter, some minor fading. I wish I had remembered that I copied this yesterday as well, because that means there's a good chance that their elusive English language service that the run 1300--1400 at this frequency will be copyable.

EDIT: I checked for the 2100 daily broadcast on 11635 at 21:20 UTC, but nothing was on.
When I checked for the 2200 daily broadcast on 10715, it was on and I immediately noted new number sets being read. (When you hear the same thing for half a month. So although they did send old numbers earlier in the day, they sent six entirely new sets. As with the ones sent on April 18, it's as if HM01's operators a playing catch-up, even losing a file transmission in the process. Note that the fifth number set ends in "2," indicating a file that would have first been sent on 01 May. There should have been a number set with file starting on April 19, if they were on schedule.
