Longwave Loggings / Nondirectional beacon challenge
« on: January 04, 2017, 1723 UTC »
So far, with my meager antenna setup, the only thing I can ever get on LW is the "AP" beacon, a mere 16 miles from my home. (If the band on the Satellit 750 receiver went below 100 kW, I could try for WWVB, but it doesn't.) It's doubtful I could ever hope to set up the kind of antenna for real LW DX that most of you are using, but it occurred to me that I don't know which among you has heard AP, and of those who have, which of you are the furthest away. I don't read these posts very often since I'm kind of left out of the fun, but this seems like it can be interesting.

So my challenge is to see who hear can get (or already has copied) AP (at 260 kHz) and for whom it's the greatest DX.

Obituary of Carrie Fisher with clips from past interviews. SIO 222-333 depending on fades, which is a bit better than has been usual at this time of day in recent weeks.

Spy Numbers / HM01 - Pedro drops the ball
« on: December 27, 2016, 1606 UTC »
I tuned into frequency 11435 kHz at 1557 UTC today (27 Dec. 2016), by which time HM01 is usually broadcasting, but there was nothing but static. However, the sound of the carrier coming on the air was noted at 1602. At 1603 the sound of RDFT was finally noted, followed by numbers and more RDFT, as if someone forgot to turn on the transmitter until the middle of the broadcast. As of 1605 everything seems to be normal.

General Radio Discussion / Propagation question
« on: December 25, 2016, 1449 UTC »
I'm curious about what the more experienced of you think about this. Last night, Wolverine Radio came on with a very good signal here in Colorado at 6950. Apparently I was the only one getting it well based on the logs, so he switched frequencies to 4020, after which most midwest and eastern listeners reported much better reception, while it was below the noise floor here. I first wondered if I had been benefiting from some NVIS propagation when he was on the higher frequency, but then it occurred to me that that's supposed to be more likely on lower frequencies. Am I wrong? Was 43m just long last night? Just trying to learn what I can from the experience. Thank you.

0104 Testing
0105 Wolverine ID into "Let's Make Christmas Merry, Baby" Amos Milburn
0108 "Christmas Spirit" Julia Lee
0111 "Hello Santa Claus" Cecil Gant
0114 Wolverine ID into "Christmas Time, Part 1" Jimmy McCracklin
0116 "I'll Be Home For Christmas" Fats Domino
       Reception is good, SIO 333-444.
0119 "Santa Claus, Do You Ever Get The Blues?" Roomful of Blues
0122 Drunken DJ live with Christmas greetings. Something about 4020. Frequency change?
0125 I think I hear it weakly on 4020. Boo! It was a thousand times better on 6950.
0127 there's bad noise on this frequency, can only just tell that there's something under it.
0140 it's starting to be copyable.
0226 SSTV audible
0228 OM voice audible, presumably Drunken DJ, but too weak to make out
0229 another SSTV
0232 music?

Thanks for the show! Merry Christmas Wolverine!

Weak but distinct and copyable, active 1020-1025 and 1050-1055 UTC. This Volmet is on a rotation with Honolulu, Hong Kong and Tokyo Volmets using this frequency, but Auckland is the only one I have heard. Not even a hint of any of the others.

THE Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is concerned with the decision of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) to shut down its Shortwave Radio Services to the Pacific by the end of January next year.

PINA joins the growing voices opposed to the ABC’s plan to close this ‘valuable and vital source of information’ to people and communities in the Pacific that have relied on Radio Australia for almost eight decades.

More so now with most Pacific Island Countries in the middle of their cyclone season, said PINA President Moses Stevens, who laments the impact of the service will have on the peoples in the Pacific who rely on the service after it is closed in January.

“PINA is concerned because it would mean the end of an era in regional broadcasting and a service that Pacific people have been reliant on for news, information and entertainment for over many years to date,” he said.

Shortwave Broadcast / All India Radio, 6165 kHz, 1515z, 12/19/16
« on: December 19, 2016, 1536 UTC »
This has been a welcome morning station for a few weeks now. Generally best heard around 1345-1430 at my QTH (sunrise being right in this time range), today it was better after sunrise and is persisting well past its usual washout t. Still getting S7 peaks with an SIO of 322. Occasional music with frequent discussion from a female announcer. Reportedly in Baluchi language.

I caught this a week ago, not knowing what it was as it didn't seem to be on any schedule. It was there again this week. Eibi now shows that Radio Adal is on at this time and frequency on Wed and Sat. Will update the title and description of the video later to reflect that.

2339 OM singing, perhaps a Christmas carol, pehaps a classical piece. Faint and faded, shazam not cooperating.
2342 "Winter Wonderland" OM vocals, possibly Frank Sinatra? Tony Bennett per Shazam
2345 QRM intensifying. A different tune is playing, big band style. Signal swelled up at 2346, shazam says "What Will Santa Claus Say?" Louis Prima
2347 "O Holy Night," OM singer. Jose Carreras and the Vienna State Opera Chorus per Shazam
2351 local QRM way up, can't really tell what's playing anymore
2357 hearing weak signal with indistinct song, doesn't sound like rap or Xmas carols. A different station perhaps like others are reporting.
