22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Re: Strong RTTY or similar on 22m
« on: September 23, 2023, 0053 UTC »
This signal is present here in AZ much of the time and generally fairly strong, sometimes QRT for short periods of time then returning. This evening, while monitoring CW beacons up the band on the SDR, I saw it in the waterfall sending FSK CW. Jumped down and caught the tail end:

...2522871 K

I have seen it do this before, not enough to establish if there is any schedule to it.

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Re: PCO
« on: September 22, 2023, 2343 UTC »
Hi Bill, I have "PCO" right now on 22 SEP 2023 23:37Z, weak but readable and making it through some splatter from an AM station up the band. Have noticed it on the SDR the past couple of days. On the Airspy HF+ Discovery and 60 ft longwire. Good hearing you out there old friend. I retire in two weeks so will be a lot more radio active. Working on a couple of 22M beacons to have going from here in San Tan Valley, AZ (I have moved to a much more rural area with room for real antennas).  73!

Dasher, about one dash per second, 13560.36 KHz in the midst of the usual mid band ISM signal and CODAR. Running S4-5 on the Airspy HF+ Discovery and SE/NW longwire. 30 DEC 2022 22:20 Z

Also have PCO, RR, and K6FRC visible. KG7BZ and KD9QZO on WSPR.

HF Beacons / Re: Un-ID Beacon on 4096 last night "TCO" ?
« on: January 15, 2022, 0135 UTC »
Token believes it to be a once in a while pirate station (KPZL) that shows up around new years, tries transmitting here and there to "puzzle" listeners and then it goes off the air.

At 01:32 UTC it paused and sent "KPZL" and then resumed with "TCO"

01:39 UTC it paused and sent "TE2" then "- .... -" which I believe is the symbol for a "dash" or subtraction sign

Got it here at S9+7 right now sending "TCO", very strong and solid. DW in the CW bandpass right below it with some fading. 01:25 UTC 15 JAN 2022

HF Beacons / LGB CW Beacon 7999.0 KHz 21:25 UTC 01 JAN 2022
« on: January 01, 2022, 2137 UTC »
Went checking for "Q" and other 8 MHz area beacons and I have a very strong beacon repeating "LGB" on 7999.0 KHz. LGB is not on any coastal marker list I have and a search of HF Underground and the web in general doesn't yield any previous info at least that I could turn up. Any thoughts? Drift net beacon?  The short pause between IDs would be unusual for one of those. Or is this a new one...

KPZL still going strong at 21:15 UTC (14:15 local) mid day. S7-S9 on two different long wires and a vertical on two Airspy SDRs and the Icom IC-R8500. Very strong, bright signal in the waterfalls. I can hear it on my Grundig YB-400 portable with only the telescopic antenna. Quite a solid signal! Similar strength signals on 40 meter CW. Very interesting propagation for this frequency range in the middle of the day.

Very strong here at 03:55 UTC, I know steganography is hiding a message within a message but I am not much of a puzzle guy. Anyone know how to decode it? This is what I copied this time for the "encoded" message:

EGQCN TNBQO EDHHW TFWLH JPZFZ NHGWL JLHKC CIJKL

I certainly could have miss copied one in there somewhere. Numbers station here in the "pirate" broadcast band, hopefully not a spy  ;D

Ran across this while checking in below 40 meters... spotted it mid transmission on the SDR and started copying it down, here is what I have:

...THAT YOU ARE ALIVE FOR THE NEXT KPZL MESSAGE PUZZLE THIS STEGANOGRAPHIA EGZCN TNBQO EDNHW TFWLH JPZFZ NNGWL JLHKC KIJKL KPZL PUZZLE RADIO

GREETINGS AND BEST WISHES TO EVERYONE FROM KPZL PUZZLE RADIO HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 PLEASE GET VACCINATED TO INCREASE THE PROBABLITY THAT YOU ARE ALIVE FOR THE NEXT KPZL MESSAGE PUZZLE THIS STEGANOGRA...

Signal faded and is getting clobbered now by the upper sideband of the AM station on 6930. The CW message is still going as of 00:17 UTC but to far down into the noise now.
