Equipment / Re: Regarding long wire antennas.
« on: May 08, 2016, 0306 UTC »
If ever looking to upgrade or try something else, and especially if dealing with local common-mode noise on the proposed longwire, perhaps consider a more balanced, yet still simple antenna like a 40m-band dipole or even a G5RV Jr. for your ~50' span. Simply fold back the ends or let the ends hang down if the antenna is a little longer than span. Roll your own "ugly balun" with a few feet of your coaxial feedline as a basic choke. Either should suffice for receiving most of the HF spectrum.

I remeber how the vertical double-drum VFO of the QR reminded me of the later Radio Shack DX-200.

I have three of them, along with the matching sepeakers, in storage needing checked out. Probably all need realigned at this point, assuming they were even decently aligned from the factory, as noted in the linked review.

A properly working DX-160 was more than capable of handling casual listening of the typical BCB and SW flamethrowers of its era, which was more of its intended market IMO given its price point. Despite being single conversion, it was a desktop receiver with a BFO, bandspread, selectable AGC, antenna trimmer, etc. for around half the price of the popular FRG-7.

Lots of those casual listeners shopping for a shortwave radio at Radio Shack also just hung a short wire up the wall inside or maybe a basic long wire out the window to listen to VOA, BBC, etc.; thus another reason for the often vast differences in user experiences compared to the more serious DXers often using dipoles, loops, preselectors, antenna tuners, etc. for the more difficult catches.

Justed tuned in to the show. Janice Joplin, BB King, etc.

Peaking S9+ with some mild to moderate static crashing. Good sound quality as usual.

Thanks for the broadcast! :)

I do not QSL much, but IIRC, I tried to do a QSL with Radio Miraya via email a couple of years ago. No reply.

MW Loggings / Re: MW antenna ideas
« on: January 06, 2016, 1548 UTC »
As noted, your HF rig attenuates MW so help with front-end overload from nearby commercial broadcasters, especially for 160m band reception, as that amateur band is right above the MW broadcast band. If operating at 160m, you ideally want to hear other amateurs instead of splatter from nearby AM broadcasters. ;)

The reason the A99 sounds "better" (probably more like less noise, right?) at MW is because of its dramatically compromised efficiency at such low frequencies.

Your A99 has a significant matching section, as it is basically a 1/2-wave, end-fed vertical dipole for upper-HF. Forget a tuner, too, IMO. In a pinch, the A99 can go down to the 15m amateur band with reduced efficiency via a decent antenna tuner, but it really drops off below there. It is a decent antenna for 11m CB, plus even the 10m and 12m amateur bands with a quick adjustment of the antenna's tuning rings. It is way out of tuning for MW, or to be straightforward, actually for pretty much any frequency below the 12m amateur band.

About the "random" wire, there are numerous variables involved in the performance: resonance, impedance, RFI ingress, etc. Noise can be an issue with simpl longwire antennas, especially due to common-mode coupling from the feedline. A 9:1 balun (or other ratio depending upon wire length) could help with noise, plus improve impedance matching.

Being realistic, any seriously widebanded HF antenna typically is a compromise, again for numerous variables. If you are looking for an off-the-shelf MW/HF receiving solution with a moderate footprint and a simple end-point feed, consider taking a look at the basic Par EF-SWL. That said, a balanced antenna, like a fan dipole (for your bands of interest) or a large horizontal loop would be even better IMO. A good start for more antenna ideas, and even more so if you do not mind building your own wire antennas:

Sadly, music on the typical 11m CB frequencies often is QRM to annoy others instead of what we would call "pirate radio."

That said, one can stumble across an occasional pirate radio broadcast on 11m CB. Case in point from a few days ago....

Typical comments about 11m operators aside, I (as a teenager) admittedly used to regularly talk on channels 6, 11, and 26 back in the 1990s. I will digress on the wattage involved, though it involved a high-power radio driving a solid state amp driving a tube amp. o.0

Looping funk/soul music among the DX pileup. Actually sounded pretty good, too.

Switched to the 9' vertical for an upper-HF skim, and the 11m CB band is quite active tonight/morning. Likely sporadic-e propagation.

A quick roll of the VFO at 0655z encountered AM and SSB traffic from Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Louisianna, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, and probably lots more.

Music at 0542z. SINPO 55435. Some fading.

Peaking over S9+30 on my ground loop with the preslector tuned and preamp engaged.

Impressive signal to here, especially if still running under a KW. No idea on the transmitting antenna, though.

Averaging around S5 with some deep fades again tonight.
