Longwave Loggings / unid 305
« on: November 27, 2019, 0145 UTC »
Heard a Canadian with a rather longish DAID just before midnight GMT (11-26)
on 305.  Could not get a solid ID but the last letter was "T".
Conditions seem rather quiet tonight for a change.

Caught KFAB  late this afternoon before they went to their nighttime pattern (away from me).
Managed to hear them quite clearly under WGNZ in its null.

WGNZ AM Fairborn OH rolling in here tonight on 1110.  That's 200 miles on 2 watts.
WBT Charlotte and KFAB Omaha  nowhere to be heard.

Nice work.
If you would like a similar challenge, try for 50kw KMOX AM 1120 St. Louis  MO (if you haven't already).
You may have to dig it out from under 50kw KPNW AM on the same freq in Eugene OR.

CIAO pretty much has the 530 spot all to itself.   It's location in Brampton ON is not that far from
here but the signal is sporadic.  Can sometimes hear a Cuban at night playing nice music on 530.
There is (was) a beacon at 529 that would have a good nighttime CW signal but haven't heard it
in quite a while.
Anyway, nice catch from IN.

KRVN is a tough one here, WCBS NYC is loud and really can't be nulled to favor KRVN from my location.
In nulling WCBS, WRFD Columbus OH comes in.  Was able to hear WPIP Winston-Salem NC (1.8kw)
under WRFD this morning just before our sunrise.  The NC station is a daytimer.

WGTK Louisville is the dominant station on 970 in here at night with a 5kw signal.
However, took a listen this evening around 0035Z and heard some rock (Nirvana and Van Halen),
which paralleled with the WWRK online stream, underneath the KY station.
Several sources and another recent post in this forum has WWRK at only 31 watts at night ???

WSB usually a good signal in here at night as long as adjacent channel local WJR AM 760
has the IBOC turned off.  Thank you WJR !   :)

The last bastion of AM radio is the drive times.  If you want to screw that up, just go digital.
The all or nothing nature of digital would mean complete signal dropout as a vehicle moves
through areas of fluctuating signal strength.

I don't agree with the notion that the AM band is better off with less stations. A dead medium is less useful in the eyes of government than a slowly dying one.

I know a lot of DXers complain about the plethora of signals they have to dig through to hear that rare one on the other side of the continent, but do we really want a dead AM band?

In most of Europe right now, there are no MW stations. Is that the kind of band we want?

No, we don't want a dead AM band, but it's kinda like a tree... you prune out the dead wood and the tree is healthier.
You gotta wonder how financially viable are stations that run 44 or 26 watts or 6 watts of power in the evening.
All it does is add to the QRM and render the  frequency useless.
